'11 TN DB Derek King

I think you are correct for public schools, but I think for private schools it may be up to the individual school. Not positive on this but I believe it is accurate.

I believe I have heard there are a few private schools that have coaches who just coach football instead of teach a class also.

Wow, coaches that actually care about a kid's education!
Asinine statement. I think most coaches care about their players education but you should have teachers dedicating their time to teaching and coaches dedicating their time to coaching. I've heard several stories of teachers getting assigned coaching jobs when they had zero experience or desire to coach. You think education is a priority when you straddle a teacher with coaching on top of his teaching?

I've heard several stories of teachers getting assigned coaching jobs when they had zero experience or desire to coach.

This has happened for years and years in Tennessee at a lot of high school programs. Like I said earlier, in many areas including this one, football is not prioritized like baseball and basketball are on the high school and junior high levels in the state.

Tennessee would be a better breeding ground for talent if they would utilize the pop warner and middle school teams as training for the high school teams, then you would get skill players in high school that know what they are doing. If I am not mistaken that is what Maryville does. They start their kids out in Pop Warner and teach them till they are in high school.

Good...that'll just ensure he's a higher rated prospect when he signs with us...ala Marsalis Teague :)

Teague was highly rated because brother can play ball and not because he was a UF commit.

He has now transitioned positions twice and has the brain and athleticism to do both well. I'm impressed as I can be with him.

agreed. Teague is an intelligent, hardworking superior athlete. no better combination of attributes in the world

Did you miss the smiley face in my post?

It was definitely a tongue-in-cheek comment on my part

nm on the 2nd question

I'm assuming a Teague. Was that intended to be clever?

No...sorry...when I glanced at your post I somehow saw "because his brother can play ball"...you responded before I could correct my mistake

Considering: Auburn, Louisville, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Performance: Shut down the Olive Branch receivers all night. Limited LSU commit Jalen Collins to only one catch for 43 yards in a 46-14 victory. King was also in on several tackles and had a very nice pass breakup in the end zone late in the contest.
Strengths: Track speed. King is built well and doesn't get bullied by bigger receivers. He already has the size and speed to play cornerback in college. He also plays aggressively and physical in run support. As a wide receiver, King does a great job blocking downfield for his quarterback and running backs. He is also an effective kick returner.

Weaknesses: Sometimes King gives the receiver a little too much cushion in man-to-man coverage.- G.P.

Grade: B

Ha.. I read it the same way at first... Seeing words that aren't there, wonder what kind of dyslexia that is.. :)

Is any of these db prospects seen maybe as future lb.'s? We just seem to be in with so many that it makes me wonder if the staff sees them as something else possibly than just dbs.

"I feel like the tradition is always there at Tennessee. The great players they produce out of their program and it's in my home state," King offered. "It's 2:30 away from where I live so it will be close to family, so it's not too far away."

"Coach (Eric) Russell has been recruiting me but I spend a lot of time with coach Joseph. He's a really cool guy and I could maybe see myself playing under him one day," King said
It may be a while until King makes his decision though. He plans on taking official visits in October and November and wants to find a place that feels like home for him.

"The atmosphere and it feels like I'm at home," King said in what's important to him while looking for a school. "I want to go to a school that has a good academic program and I want to go to the school that's going to give me the most opportunity for playing time, because that important to me, seeing the field as early as possible."
