The coaching is so subpar in the state, at least in West Tennessee. I think that could be the biggest hurdle. A lot of teachers who have little to no idea how to coach are stuck in there as coaches. How many coaches just coach in the state? It's getting a little better but still isn't near the level of some of the states around us.Unless their is a significant shift in population, demographics and the way middle school football is prioritized it will never become a top notch recruiting state.

Maybe he was referring to this year.
There are some really good quality coaches in East Tennessee. George Quarles alone makes us respectable. He was honored with being the Head Coach of the All American game for the east team last year. Also, Gary Rankin (Alcoa) is pretty well respected in the coaching community. And I am pretty sure there is a rule in the state of Tennessee that coaches have to teach classes also. Correct me if I am wrong.
If I am not mistaken none, In Tennessee all coaches (HC & Asst. who are paid by the school) must have a teaching certificate and must teach a class. The coaching is so subpar in the state, at least in West Tennessee. That's one of the things that holds Tennessee back in producing top talent as well as better, more competitive high school teams compared to other states.
