'12 AL OT Victor Salako (UAB player)

https://medium.com/@andrewrivins/breaking-down-the-potential-uab-transfers-5b8268ebaae3

I don't know who this guy is or how much credibility he has but he seems to know a good bit.

Solid writeup on all of them which is good for them. hopefully they all land somewhere. Salako was listed in the "will be recruited category".

LT Victor Salako (R-So.) — Like Byrd, Salako is a veteran on the offensive line. The Huntsville native has started 23 games at left tackle and been a staple at the position. He was lightly recruited out of high school but that shouldn’t be the case this time around. What makes sense: There is no real immediate connection to a school for Salako, but he would be an upgrade over a junior college lineman with two years of eligibility remaining.
basically nothing we didn't know. Having watched some more film he's definitely better at dropping back than bulldozing on the line. Although when pinned or at the goal line they seem to run behind him a lot. He does not pursue the play very much if at all.

ftr if he makes it to UT best believe I'm buying me a jersey.

If we don't go after him hard, u gotta think the coaches feel good about Blair next season.

Totally. My "obsession" is actually way less about this guy in particular and way more about did we get the help we need to win next year. OL is definately developmental as Butch has been quoted as saying and none of us want to wait two more years or watch more true freshman cut their teeth on the line.

Exactly.. Either way- I think the coaches know what they have in our returning linemen and are aiming to win big next year.

Agree with both you guys...

Nobody that took snaps at OT this season was even "average" and quite often they were down right awful (not stating anything everybody doesn't already know). In 2015 UT needs 2 OT's plus depth unless the guys currently on campus can improve an incredible amount this off season. Even if Blair turns out to be the beat all end all LT, we still need a quality RT and quality depth. I don't view the guys who started there this season even as quality depth. After watching some of this guy's tape, he is clearly better at this moment than anybody who took OT snaps for us this season. Unless there is some type of character issue, going after him is a no brainer in my book.

Agreed.

Have we spoken to him

I doubt it. If I had to guess he'll go to Louisville. They are rumored to have spoken to him. He's likely a reach for us but man if so I hope that means we actually have a plan for the line next year. I saw tons of straight whiffs etc this year and this guy at least gets hands on the rusher and moves his feet.

It was really, really bad with Thomas and Robertson together on the right side. It never got better and may have gotten worse with each game. The others had their share - but that was where the bulk of it originated. Having LT adequately manned improves the entire O-line significantly. Kerby is adequate at RT if there are no other options, even though he is really good at RG. Crowder, Jackson, etc. are all going to be better next season.

No coaches are allowed to contact any of the UAB players until they are officially released on Monday. I'm pretty sure it's a violation.

Troy hired Neal Brown the OC from Kentucky. He's very young, only 34 I believe, and was the OC at troy under Blakeney from 08-09 at the age of 28. He's not exactly a guy with Alabama roots, but he has been around the program at least.

I love keeping up with the smaller schools in the state.

I somehow completely missed that hire. I have followed UAb and USA a little more than Troy but sounds like a good hire for them.

Good to know. Of course I am highly sure there are back channels to speed up that process. Hey here is my number in case he wants to call.

I agree I believe our guard play will be pretty good if we can simply lock down the other spots. Having watched UAB they were the opposite they basically avoided rushing at Salako. I never really saw him get beat but as I previously mentioned his stength wasn't road grading. He'd get push but then sort of fall or slide past the dlineman.

2 years ago no way I ever bring this dude up. I just think he matches what we miss at this moment. I think he'll end up at Louisville when it is all said and done.

FYI while I think it's probably that they end up at Louisville I think it's worth mentioning that UAB's last OL coach is now at Georgia and they apparently need help there as well

Is it fair to say Mahoney is on the hot seat next year?

I can't believe all this Mahoney hate.. Classic example of a guy at the wrong place at the wrong time.. Our oline recruiting has been terrible the last few years. Nobody could've done anything with this group.

Is this your "insider" opinion?
