'12 TN ATH Sheldon Dawson

During the summer, it was believed that Ole Miss and TN were pretty much the 2 mainly in the running with Arky just outside of that. He barely mentioned Memphis when talking back then. He did not perform very well at a few camps late in the summer and the word was that a few schools slowed up a little on him. He wanted to commit and I believe Memphis was the school willing to take at the time. I have also heard that there was some family pushing for him to stay close.

He has had a pretty decent season so far on a team loaded with talent that has not lived up to the hype. With Memphis in the dumps, it is not hard to imagine him looking to jump ship if the big schools come calling again.

I remember him being an Ole Miss lean, but i dont know about the whole thing on schools not taking him. We and Ole Miss definitely would of taken him, but the day before, I remember posts coming up saying he was going to commit to Memphis. Here is what Barton Simmons wrote on it:

"Dawson has NFL cornerback written all over him. He is very committed to Larry Porter and will be tough to pull away from Memphis as long as Porter remains the head coach. If Memphis decides to make a change, though, I expect Dawson to make a change as well."

but i dont know about the whole thing on schools not taking him.

Local chatter in Memphis. Saw similar info coming from several boards. Even Memphis board to my recollection seemed to believe that they got him as a steal.

Again, not from what I heard around Memphis.

That's probably people who were trying to find a reason why he chose Memphis over SEC schools. Tennessee pulled out a lot on his unofficial here, and that moved us up and got us back into the race. I know for a fact Kaiwan Lewis and Dennis Northcutt was not the same players when they camped, but Dawson impressed everybody at UT. There is no way we take Blanc over Dawson, if we didnt want to take him. Arkansas, Georgia, Ole Miss, Cincinatti, and UT have all stayed in heavy contact with him. UT and Ole Miss would of quit recruiting him now that he's committed if they weren't sure if they would take him or not.

This is the first I've heard of any of this. All I've been reading about him the last few months is how good of a summer he had and how impressive he was everywhere he went, thus the reason for him sky-rocketing up 247's rankings.

I have a hard time seeing him end up at Memphis. I'm sure he likes Porter a lot and all but I have a hard time seeing this kid ending up at Memphis when all is said and done. That program is completely in the gutter and I doubt Porter can ever turn things around there. If he wasn't a take then why would all these schools still be after him? I know for a fact Cincinnati wants him badly.

I feel bad for this kid if he wants to stay with Memphis. They are freaking terrible. No other way to put it. When you get pounded by Arkansas State and your only win is against Austin Peay, you suck at football.

I agree. Porter isn't turning that program around. Just wont happen. A complete waste for a kid like that to go to Memphis.

Haven't seen this one posted.

I'm a big Dawson fan, but Hubbs said back in July that he had a subpar camp and we cooled

"As of now, I'm committed," Dawson said. "I've been talking to [Memphis] every now and then. They try to give me a little space and I try to give them a little space. But we always check up on each other and see how we're doing."

"I'm going to try to catch the Tennessee-LSU game (Saturday in Knoxville)," Dawson said. "And I'm going to try to go to an Ole Miss game."

"I'm definitely going to Cincinnati, Tennessee and Memphis," Dawson said. "Tennessee is telling me I'll be a running back or corner, but I believe they're recruiting me as a corner. Cincinnati is recruiting me as a running back. Memphis is recruiting me at both. I like offense, but I'm also doing good on the defensive side."

Georgia and Tennessee continue to make a run at Memphis (Tenn.) Ridgeway athlete Sheldon Dawson, a Memphis commit who could play either running back or cornerback in college. Neither, however, apparently has been able to get him on campus this fall because of logistics

What did they say on rivals about Dawson?

The Vols, in particular, told Dawson after his commitment that they would still pursue him.

"Tennessee, they told they were still going to come after me. They told me that off the top. But, I kind of knew," Dawson said.

Dawson continues to hear from Tennessee's coaching staff and hopes to make a visit after his season. He said the reason he remains so interested in the Vols because of the feeling he had around the staff during a visit this past summer.

"I just like the whole staff. I visited Tennessee this summer already, but I haven't been back up there. I just feel a connection with the coaching staff. I like what they've got going on there, the system coach (Derek) Dooley staff has going on," Dawson said.

Along with Tennessee, Dawson hopes to visit Cincinnati, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Georgia after the season.

This may be obvious, but we are taking at least one more DB in this class (most likely a CB).

Dawson is having a monster senior year. We are after him hard. Let's just say he won't end up at Memphis (his original commit). :whistling:

Elston>>>>>Dawson. Elston has way more upside compared to Dawson. Dawson's has alot of potential and is a good player, but Elston's got him beat in terms of athletic ability imo.
