12 TN RB I'tavius Mathers

There are a lot of all-purpose backs in HS. He won't return kicks in college.

You know this how? Crystal ball? Fortune cookie? Call to Miss Cleo?

Yes there are a lot of all purpose backs in high school and 99.6% couldn't carry that over to the SEC. I think he can, not saying he will, not saying he is as fast as Spiller just saying he is athletic enough to be all purpose at the next level.

You think he's the best back in the state?

No question, he is the best back in the state!

He does not have Spiller speed but this does not mean he is slow. He is plenty fast. I do believe he can return kicks in college. Probably will not return punts.

This is not a knock on Mathers(I think he's pretty damn good) but Spiller was a speed demon.

Mathers is completely different type of RB.

Yes to this. I like IM but noway I believe he has the same ability or is even the same type of back. Kimbrow is a better compare IMO.

I actually prefer Mathers over the other instate backs, but I haven't completed my talent scout course so this could change fwiw.

Finally someone besides me. Thanks. Mathers is on the road to #1 instate IMO. The kid is doing it against really tough competition. People are getting on the I-train.

You think he's the best back in the state?

Yes, and he will push to be the best period. I still look at Kimbrow as an athlete first. If it was up to me and I could only take one of the big three instate RBs, it would be IM; TIFWIW :twocents:

I've been out of the loop lately, but I've been going back and reading some of the earlier posts in this thread, and I must say that I beg to differ on a few things.

1) I have some friends from the Blackman area, and they insist that there is no "Enemy" influence in the area. Sure, the assistant principal is an Enemy follower, but neither I'tavius nor anyone else has never felt any kind of pressure to go to Tuscaloosa. Take that for what it's worth.

2) Philip Shadowens is NOT an Enemy follower.

3) I believe that there is only one player on their roster who is from Murfreesboro. Number 51. Junior special teams player Carson Tinker, who attended nearby Riverdale High School.

There may have been others from the Murfreesboro area in the last twenty years who suited up (I honestly don't have that information; can someone help me out with that?) for the Filthy Elephants, but as far as I know, Murfreesboro is not as big a pipeline to Tuscaloosa as you think.

4) This man is the real deal. I would love to see him on Rocky Top, but wherever he goes, he will make an impact. Expect more schools to come calling.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks Raven

Its good to hear that this may be wide open. I want this guy in Tennessee orange; I hope he is strongly being considered by CDD and IM is strongly considering playing at Tennessee.:loco:

I got a chance to see him scrimmage Gallatin last year. He wasn't the fastest RB I've ever seen (we had a DB that just clocked a 4.4 a couple weeks ago, and he ran him down twice). But Mathers still had close to 200 yards in that scrimmage. Also, Gallatin is going to have probably a couple D-1 defensive kids this year (Maurice Box, 6'2" 225 LB and 6'4 345 DT Tre' Haynes) Mathers made them non factors in that scrimmage. He's the best RB I've seen in person, in my lifetime, in TN high school football.

I think this is the scrimmage your talking about. It shows him breaking a long run and he also broke a long run earlier in that scrimmage but our video guy was late getting to this scrimmage and missed the first one.

New article on TOS discussing his visit to Alabama for spring game. Anyone care to summarize?

-247sports

“I went to Alabama’s spring game last weekend,” Mathers said. “It was a great time down there. I really enjoyed the experience. I was able to take a tour of the facilities before the game. I thought everything looked nice, especially the weight room.
"I was also impressed with the environment at the game. There were a lot of fans there, and I liked that it’s not too far of a drive from home.”

Tennessee hosted Mathers earlier in the spring and he came away with high marks of the Vols. But, this one may go on a while as teams continue to enter the fray for Mathers, including Alabama, Notre Dame and more. Mathers said he grew up an Auburn fan and had never been to Tennessee before the spring.

I like in Murfreesboro and have some knowledge of the situation. Mathers is very interested in going out of state to play. Not saying UT has no chance, but him being an 'in-state' player does not carry much weight in this situation. UT is just another team recruiting him like everybody else. Shad is certainly going to let him make his own decision and will not tell him where to go. But due to what has happened with Rod, Shad is not saying too many nice things about UT.

I have heard this, too. It seems that Shadowens is not very pleased with the way things have transpired at Tennessee while Rod was there, with there being three head coaches and the multiple position changes and such. But I don't think it will have that much of an effect on I'tavius's decision.

I'd take Cross or Robinson over Mathers all day long

I would not say I would take them OVER him, but seeing as Cross chose to be a Vol now...there is 1 more spot(IMO) and 4-5 backs on the board. IF the staff is set on waiting out Kimbrow, I doubt they take another back in this class until they see what he does on NSD.
