There are a lot of all-purpose backs in HS. He won't return kicks in college.

This is not a knock on Mathers(I think he's pretty damn good) but Spiller was a speed demon.
Mathers is completely different type of RB.
I actually prefer Mathers over the other instate backs, but I haven't completed my talent scout course so this could change fwiw.
You think he's the best back in the state?

Thanks for the info.I've been out of the loop lately, but I've been going back and reading some of the earlier posts in this thread, and I must say that I beg to differ on a few things.
1) I have some friends from the Blackman area, and they insist that there is no "Enemy" influence in the area. Sure, the assistant principal is an Enemy follower, but neither I'tavius nor anyone else has never felt any kind of pressure to go to Tuscaloosa. Take that for what it's worth.
2) Philip Shadowens is NOT an Enemy follower.
3) I believe that there is only one player on their roster who is from Murfreesboro. Number 51. Junior special teams player Carson Tinker, who attended nearby Riverdale High School.

There may have been others from the Murfreesboro area in the last twenty years who suited up (I honestly don't have that information; can someone help me out with that?) for the Filthy Elephants, but as far as I know, Murfreesboro is not as big a pipeline to Tuscaloosa as you think.
4) This man is the real deal. I would love to see him on Rocky Top, but wherever he goes, he will make an impact. Expect more schools to come calling.

I got a chance to see him scrimmage Gallatin last year. He wasn't the fastest RB I've ever seen (we had a DB that just clocked a 4.4 a couple weeks ago, and he ran him down twice). But Mathers still had close to 200 yards in that scrimmage. Also, Gallatin is going to have probably a couple D-1 defensive kids this year (Maurice Box, 6'2" 225 LB and 6'4 345 DT Tre' Haynes) Mathers made them non factors in that scrimmage. He's the best RB I've seen in person, in my lifetime, in TN high school football.
New article on TOS discussing his visit to Alabama for spring game. Anyone care to summarize?
Posted via VolNation MobileI went to Alabamas spring game last weekend, Mathers said. It was a great time down there. I really enjoyed the experience. I was able to take a tour of the facilities before the game. I thought everything looked nice, especially the weight room.
"I was also impressed with the environment at the game. There were a lot of fans there, and I liked that its not too far of a drive from home.
-VQ.Tennessee hosted Mathers earlier in the spring and he came away with high marks of the Vols. But, this one may go on a while as teams continue to enter the fray for Mathers, including Alabama, Notre Dame and more. Mathers said he grew up an Auburn fan and had never been to Tennessee before the spring.

I like in Murfreesboro and have some knowledge of the situation. Mathers is very interested in going out of state to play. Not saying UT has no chance, but him being an 'in-state' player does not carry much weight in this situation. UT is just another team recruiting him like everybody else. Shad is certainly going to let him make his own decision and will not tell him where to go. But due to what has happened with Rod, Shad is not saying too many nice things about UT.
I'd take Cross or Robinson over Mathers all day long
