'13 HI OG/DT Reeve Koehler

Dont shoot the messenger but my brother got a text from koehler today and his offer has apparently been pulled. Same for his teammate. Definitely bummed about that.

Not surprising. Wiesman will be a part of this class.

I agree for the most part, but there will be a big drop off after 2013:

Fulton Sr.
Stone Sr.
Bullard Sr.
Jackson Jr.
Richardson Jr.
Pair Jr.
Crowder So.
Kerbyson So.
Posey So.

This is exactly why this OL class is critical. At best, we return 2 starters in 2014 with no proven depth.

Koehler weighed 330 lbs at camp this summer. I really think he just doesn't fit what Jones and Mahoney are looking for in interior OL.

If true, I question the move, particularly when we're talking about a plyr of Koehler (#9 OG / #157 plyr Nat) talents.

I agree & quite frankly zone blocking schemes are a gimmicky way of working around a lack of size. CBJ needs to realize he's not in a weak conference where that style works real well. Not to mention he probably hasn't been able to recruit guys that look like Koehler due to the venues he coached at in the past. Koehler should have been kept along w/ Pittman.

Kendrick, Sanders + Christian Morris and the Weisman kid

I would consider that a very strong OL class, possibly even try for Derwin Gray again?

+1

Awesome class and I especially love that it's 3/4's in-staters...we would defintely be landing the top 3 OL's in the state IMO

I actually wanted this kid in Orange along with the LB from Hawaii as well. Koehler is supposed to announce at one of the big all star games and was looking forward to seeing UT back in the spotlight. I understand the concept of taking smaller, quicker OG/OT's in CBJ's offense. My worry is that quickness does not do a kid alot of good when SEC DT/DE's are just as quick and will put the lightweight on their as*. Have to trust in what CBJ wants to do, but this is one move I think will hurt us on the field.

Taking small anything in the SEC as the foundation for your team is stupid. Why did Texas AM, Auburn, and Florida do well in the SEC with spread like offenses? Really solid OLine play. A&M has 2 allamerican OL. Auburn had 2, and Urban had too many great OL to count at FL. This is not a smart recruiting call. The quickness that an OL can move 3 feet is more important than their fourty time, so I hope that wasn't the reason.

I'm sure that's why the NFL's best rushing attacks use zone blocking...

I don't know anything about OL but there has to be a reason we were competing against Cal and Kansas for this kid.

The offers it shows he has on Scout from Oregon, Arizona State, and Georgia kind of stick out to me. I just think the kid is a take all day long. When a top 10 player at a position wants to be a VOL, you take him. JMO

I agree.

How are these supposedly "system" offensive linemen going to fare in short yardage and goal line situations when they are facing the best defensive lines in the nation? I don't buy inferior offensive lineman winning those battles.

It is surprising to me.

Wiesman > Koehler A definitive NO.
Against SEC competition? Again, a definitive NO.
Regardless of scheme, if our current coaching staff truly believes and prefers players of Wiesman's caliber to that Koehler's, then I have very real concerns.

How about maybe they know more about this than you do........

You may be correct. I kind of look back to a certain day in 2011 when CBJ visited UT. "His guys" got smashed. When you start replacing guys who are rated top 10 at their position in the country with guys you were ready to sign at UC, I don't feel so good about what it will lead to. One guy has offers from Bowling Green, Kent State, and Marshall. The other has offers from UGA, ASU, and several other good schools. Just because CBJ was taking one to UC, does not mean you dump a top player to make room for him. This is not going to turn out well IMO.

They probably aren't going to fare well at all. Not week in and week out.

Oregon's very much interested and although RK has often stated his desire to play in the SEC they are still in pursuit.

Oregon uses a very similar zone blocking scheme. But yet we can't take Koehler because he doesn't fit the system.
