'13 OH K Andrew Gantz (UT w/o commit 1/31)

RT @MChungOZone Urban Meyer called Centerville, OH kicker Andrew Gantz Thursday after NSD. Gantz says he is 90/10 Tenn/OSU.

There is no debate. He's UT all the way. Considering the fact he's stilk tweeting abiyt being a vol and UT pride.

Honestly, with the current state of our kicking game Gantz might be worth a scholarship. Butch has the extra scholarships to give, and unless there is a home run kicker in 2014. I think we should STRONGLY consider giving this kid one.
there are two in state just pick one!!!! These are ranked 1st and 2nd in the nation by Kohls Kicking. Jamie kohls evaluation of these two Tennessee K/P.

Aaron Medley is hands down one of the most solid field goal kickers in the class of 2014. Medley is a level headed kicker that will be able to handle game-winning field goal situations better than anyone in his class. He's a college ready athlete who's coordination and abilities are far above his years. He's also a good punter as well.

One of the most talented combination specialists at camp was Tennessee native Gary Wunderlich. Wunderlich's name can be found in the top 3 of all six kicking and punting charts. He was a consistent top performer with an explosive leg in all phases of the game. Wunderlich went lights out during the 10-kick field goal charting session at Farragut High School as well as capping the kickoff and punt charts as well. He is no doubt a top division 1 prospect who should be competing at a very high level of college football next year.

Here's the deal. In our situation, if there is a kicker that the coaches feel beyond a doubt can massively upgrade that aspect of Tennessee's game..... Offer him. Don't give him preferred walk on status and let the vultures feast on the remains. We have scholarships to give. Either this year or next. Palardy is a flat out bust, and the weakest link on the chain. That is saying something as bad as this defense was last year.

RT @MChungOZone K/P Andrew Gantz out of Centerville will make his college decision in a few days. Deciding between OSU and Tennessee.

absolutely agree.

I like Gantz as a walk-on, but I definitely don't think we should offer him a full ride just to keep him away from OSU. There are at least 4 instate kickers next year who are better prospects than Gantz, IMO, and surely we didn't pass on the nation's No. 1 kicker (J. King) this year for a kid who accounted for just 15 points in his entire HS career?

Even w/o Gantz, I think we'll be OK on FGs and PATs with a combination of Palardy, Brodus, Bullock, plus a walk-on (Ault, already on the roster) or two (Calleja?). Hopefully this staff can help Palardy to improve, but he has hit 70% of his career FG attempts (75% last year). Brodus is 7 of 8 on FG attempts. Those two guys should suffice on FGs, and then let Bullock handle kickoffs and PATs if he appears capable.

IMO, if we extend an offer to Gantz this year we'll be kicking ourselves for having to turn down a better prospect (at any position) next February due to numbers.

Gantz was blown away by the facilities in Knoxville and intrigued by the idea of competing the starting place kicker job as a freshman in the fall. “Tennessee is a beautiful school and a great academic institution,” Gantz said. “They have the third largest stadium in the country and play in the SEC. They have the best facilities in the country and the most trustworthy coaches I've met.”

The Buckeyes are offering him a similar opportunity to compete for a starting spot this fall, but it would be as a punter.

Buckeyes wooing kicker

FWIW, the article above is incorrect: Gantz's punting average last year was 34.9 yards, up from just 30.6 yards his junior year.

Dang just 34.9? There is a kid from Houston co. That averaged 45.3 yards per punt with ridiculous hang time. He was also the quarterback and top wide receiver. Ran a 4.6 and is 6'3 215. Had letters of interest from LSU, ole miss, and Vanderbilt. He moved here from Texas and as a freshman in Texas he started and had 50 or so catches for 800 or so yards. His name is J.D. Tharpe

everyones melting down because he visited OSU... and even though he said hes staying with UT, nobody believes him

I think everybody's freaking out because he said he was deciding in a few days right? If he was a for sure Vol he wouldn't need to decide since he is already supposed to be a walk-on. Imo

I would guess the kid knows we did not use up all our available scholarships. He is trying to leverage the coaches into giving him one. IMO he is either a walk on or he can stay in Ohio. He does not have the stats to be considered a top kicking prospect. Walk on or pass IMO.
