'13 VA RB Derrick Green (Michigan commit)

Excerpts from Rivals -

"It was between Michigan and Tennessee," the 6-foot, 220-pound Green said. "Michigan always had the edge, but it was definitely out of those two."

"It was the coaching staff there; it's unbelievable," he said. "Coach (Brady) Hoke is a great coach, but he's an even better person. It's amazing for a head coach. "I have a good relationship with all the recruits there, especially the offensive linemen," Green said. "David Dawson and I are like brothers. It's just like home every time I go up there. I love it."

Many in the industry assumed that the top running back in the country would choose one of the SEC teams, but Green had other plans.

"People always talk about how I should go play in the SEC and play in the heat, but I prefer playing in the cold weather," he said. "With me being from New York, it was always cold so I prefer to play in the cold weather."

"Michigan was just home for me out of the three schools," he said. "I sat down and talked with my parents about it, and we just came to the conclusion that Michigan just felt like the better place. I love Tennessee and I love Auburn, but Michigan was just the place that was going to help me pursue my dreams."

If he wanted the SEC all he had to do was let it be known and stronger programs than ours currently would have been on his doorstep. If he wanted UT he would have committed earlier. Good luck to him at Michigan. Find us a some good RB's, Butch.

LOL. I wish they would sift thru this thread and start banning certain individuals. Please stop with the he's scared to play big boy football comments. The Big 10 isn't the SEC. The current status of the SEC may be the best college football has EVER seen. But that doesn't mean the Big 10 isn't big boy football. I'd be willing to bet 99% of this thread didn't play Big 10 football, much less "big boy" football in the SEC. The Big 10 is big boy football, it's major D-1...just not the SEC. And stop acting like Michigan is some scrub run of the mill program. Michigan is a top 10 all time program just like our beloved Vols. It's a MAJOR, MAJOR football program. So stop with the nonsense. And please stop talking about the SEC being "big boy" football considering we haven't done jack sh!t to contribute to it being that status as of late. Sound like a bunch of coat tale riders.

Green reminds me of Jarbari Davis more then he does Eddie Lacey or Trent Richardson. I have nothing to base it on but I have a feeling Ford has been #1 on the board since CBJ was hired. Not knocking Green wish he was coming especially since we need running backs but I'm just not sure he is a can't miss elite type back.

:salute:

Anyone who thinks he wouldnt fit in our offense scheme is just trying to avoid the disappointment.
He is a heluva back and will do well anywhere. Would have loved him in orange, but it is important to find the right fit for each university and athlete. He chose to be up north and I wish him the best!
I am proud that he had us in his final two after all the turmoil here. I think it is a great sign that Big Daddy Butch has us heading in the right direction and generating interest and excitement.

That being said..... Let's get back in the hunt for some other talent.
I really feel momentum building and don't want this to set us back.
Go VOLS!

He knew UM's coaching staff better. He isn't afraid to play in the SEC, and he doesn't suck! Get over it! He didn't want to be here, doesn't mean something is wrong with him.

Michigan is overrated year in and year out based on it's past just like Ohio State...and ND. What was the score the last time we played Michigan? 42-17 or something close to that? What about the last time we played OSU? Remember when Eddie George was going to run all over us? We shut them down like a bad habit as well. Big 10 is not big boy football...watch the Clowney destruction if you need a reminder.

Michigan is over rated due to their past....would you say the same for Tennessee? The SEC does play big boy football, but what have we done to contribute to that? Not being the best conference in the country (Big 10) doesn't mean it's high school ball. All this trash talk is sour grapes nothing more nothing less. If Derrick Green isn't a big time player capable of playing big boy ball, why did we want him?

And while Clowney did destroy the Michigan back, Michigan could very well have won that game. I can't stand UM. But any attempt to deny their position as a big time player throughout CFB history is ludacris at best. They're big time, we're big time (even though we're down). He chose them simple and plain. Time to move on.

Seems like a LOT of people on here are just so sure a recruit is leaning toward UT just because......why? We're UT? Big freakin' $h@+. I don't begrudge this kid for going to UM. Good luck to him. A bunch of guys on here jumped all over the "shock the world" comment this kid made. "Oh yeah, it's UT!" Man, you're dealing with 17 and 18 year old egomaniacs. If anyone reads anything into what any of these recruits are saying other than it being for show and to draw attention to themselves, you deserve the disappointment. I hope we land a good RB and get a nice surprise or two. But bottom line is we don't land very many big recruits until CBJ wins with lesser recruits. Then the big ones really start paying attention. MOST big time recruits want to go somewhere where they think they can play early and isn't a total rebuilding project. We are a total rebuilding project right now.

Obviously not a big fan of his choice, but we'll be fine. Next year we'll need a good RB, but we're fine for this class. Lawrence and Bell would be HUGE gets, though.

We should not expect to land ANY recruit other SEC or top 25 teams are recruiting hard. We may get a few, but things have changed alot when it comes to us having pick of the litter.

there are 2 very clear reasons why the SEC is better then the BIG 10. over signing and 1 year scholarships. the SEC does it, the BIG 10 doesnt. those of you who know the game understand. those of you who don't........google it.

yep the rules regarding the big 10 and their recruiting classes are different than the sec.. you have to get permission (see ohio state last year) in order to bypass their class rules. the southern states have soo much talent and it feeds the sec overall.. it's really amazing how many sec teams are in the top 25 in recruiting.

Because it certainly couldn't be that the SEC is in a WAY better geographic football location and boasts better facilities?

I hope your post isn't serious.

I didn't say one word about Derrick Green. He is a quality player. This is about the Big 10 being overrated every year. They haven't won an NC in a long long time but you can bet they will have 3 or 4 teams in the top 10 simply because of the blue haired sports writers living in the 70s and 80s.
