'14 FL LB Dillon Bates (UT Signee 2/5/14)

I agree, Bates will be good, but it's because he understands the game more than the others. He is not a physical specimen, he's just more cerebral than the others.

I'll take Bates over any other LB in the country, regardless of stars

Not a physical specimen? Did you see his sparq scores from the opening? What other front 7 guy has his height-weight measurables? Hell, what defensive player has his measurables. He's getting (somewhat) snubbed for some reason.

And I fully agree with your second point

"Hard Hat: Dillon Bates, Ponte Vedra, Fla.

This one goes to the biggest hitter, which is essentially the guy who laid the lumber in the game because there was not much tackling to the ground in practice. Bates arrived at the football with meaning not only during the week but in the game as well. Bates isn't the biggest linebacker and he could end up being a safety at the next level, but wherever he plays, he will not only flash the great instincts he has all week, but he'll knock a few heads."

This is exciting. I've been waiting to have a linebacker that is quick and brings the lumber. Can't wait to have him knocking heads of the opposing teams

I like that Bates was recognized for bustin heads, but this repeated line of speculation about him playing safety is just odd to me. We're bringing in some talented safety prospects, and he just doesn't seem like a safety. I guess I just don't see where the analysts are drawing that idea from.

Because he's fast. And because he's fast they think he could play safety. For some reason rivals thinks all high school LBers should be 6'4 245 before stepping on campus. And then they complain that they run a 5.0 40.

With all the teams switching to the hunh, I'd rather have a lb that can lay the wood and cover a RB or TE if needed. And Bates can do that.

The only thing they have said about his size is that he can get caught up in traffic because he's too small to get off the blocks of a FB or a big OL. I don't see that, I think his speed and knowledge allow him to bypass a lot of that. But, they don't pay me to rank players for some reason...

Does rivals do one more update? Kid needs his fifth star.

People keep speaking in code about Bates. Can't seem to get in their head he is arguably the most athletic linebacker in the class and he is WHITE. There was some recruiting "expert" a couple of months back said he was smart but needed to improve his speed! His vertical jump and speed make him an elite athlete.

He is a chip of the old block.

Few experts are really experts at nothing but BS.

Begin rant:

I have no clue what the analysts are talking about with Bates. His 40 time is elite, his shuttle time is elite, his vertical is elite, etc., and his size is comparable to current SEC OLBs making serious impacts even before having the benefit of a college weight program. The SPARQ test demonstrates his elite athleticism. He may also be a student of the game and understand offensive and defensive schemes at a higher level because of his father and training, etc. That said, the analysts reveal latent racism with their remarks when they say things like an athlete the caliber of Bates is a "student of the game," etc., without stating he is equally, if not more so, athletic because the not so subtle meaning is white players are not as athletic but smarter than their African-American peers, which is a ridiculous notion on its face. I'm pretty sure JJ Watt, Clay Matthews, etc., are just athletic freaks regardless of race and I'm also pretty sure Joshua Dobbs is an intellectual freak regardless of race. Also, while Dobbs showed some running ability this year, all the analysts referred to him as a dual threat QB and Ferguson as a prostyle even though their athletic attributes were close to one another, which is yet another not so subtle racial bias. In sum, I'm not sure there is another LB in the high school class that matches Bates' demonstrated athleticism regardless of race and this size thing, which amounts to the Emperor's new clothes accepted fallacy, is made irrespective of the facts.

End rant.

He will not play safety. Good God Farrell you act like you've never seen a player add weight once they get to college. He's already 215. Just need to add 15 more or so.

I think he was 219 at The Opening. There were reports that he may be up to 225.

He was 211 at The Opening and 215 at the UA game.

He needs to add weight, but nothing that won't come naturally. Cory Vereen was 220 his senior year and came into fall camp at an explosive 245.

Taylor Mays

Yep. Not many though. Mays lost weight in college, which is rare. Bates doesn't looks maxed out in weight like Elliott berry does. Not that eb won't grow more, as he gets older, but right this minute he's close to max. Bates could easily add 10 today, probably more as he gets older.

Bates frame looks like he could easily add 20 lbs, but I think his speed is the most important. Don't wanna bulk up and lose any speed.

I see him playing around 225 and playing well. He won't be the biggest lb, but he'll be smart, fast, and when he hits something, they know they've been hit.
