He was 211 at The Opening and 215 at the UA game.
He needs to add weight, but nothing that won't come naturally. Cory Vereen was 220 his senior year and came into fall camp at an explosive 245.
Yeah, and Big Al was never more than 6' 230. Chavis always loved undersized linebackers. From Raynoch through Burnett, then Mayo- none of those guys were 6'3 240 lbs in college.
Yep, and we are talking about a kid who hasn't even made it to college yet and he's already close to 220. His size will be perfect for LB.
Exactly. The bigger they are, the slower they are. That's one great thing that Chavis understood about LBs in particular. He took big LBs and converted them to DEs, then took big Safeties out of high school (like Burnett) and made them LBs.
Chavis sometimes gets criticized for his playcalling, but no one was better at maximizing a defense's athleticism and speed than he was. It's the formula for his sustained success against spread QBs (Manziel in particular) at LSU, and on the flip side, it's a big reason why we haven't been able to stop a mobile QB since Chief left.
Yep there is no problem here with size. He is 219 at 18 years old, so I say 230 will be easily reached without losing speed. That's perfect! These guys talk in circles sometimes. If he was 240 right now they would be saying he may grow out of the linebacker position and be a DE. He has perfect size, has great speed, great athleticism, uses his hands well to fight off blocks, and has a great football IQ. Always reading the play well. There are no problems here!
