I gotcha and I agree that he was underrated while he was here. I just didn't know it you were old enough to get the pleasure of watch Mr. Al Wilson play for UT. He was an extremely aggressive player as well and absolutely punished people when he tackled them. He was a walking highlight reel at LB. He was so much fun to watch. Hoping Cecil Cherry can be that type of player for us a few years down the road (lofty wishing I know).
Mayo was really fun to watch as well. He didn't have as many punishing hits as Al but he read plays so well and seemed to be always around the ball and making plays. One of my favorites to watch at LB.
I have to laugh when our fanbase labels AJ Johnson a beast because he wouldn't have started in the late 90s or early 2000s with how he plays. Our guys were nasty then in particular the Al Wilson. Forced more fumbles in the Florida game than Johnson has his whole career.
Kevin Simon when healthy was hell on wheels. Loved Raynoch Thompson and Eric Westmoreland too. Jerod Mayo was fun to watch grow as a player in Orange. I laugh when supposed experts ignore the fact that AJ has only 2 years in his belt for his college career. And to have an accurate comparison, we need to see how his college career concludes before any legitimate take can be made.

Two years, four years, it doesn't really matter. There are aspects of his game in which struggles, more due to athleticism than time and experience, IMO.. I think some of that can be 'hidden' in the college game but not in the NFL.. I hope I'm wrong but he probably won't be an 'every down' player in the pros. If there even is such a thing anymore.
So players between the ages of 18-22 have reached their peak? They don't grow any more? Get stronger, faster, etc.?
Not to mention, it's hard to really get a solid feel of any defensive player last year after the disaster that Sunseri brought to Knoxville. Everyone of our defenders looked slow because they were reacting to a play instead of attacking the ball. Last year's defensive woes were more an issue of confusion and schematics more so than individual talent IMO.
I think we will get a more solid look as to what kind of players we have on defense this year when we go back to a 4-3 which is what the current crop of player were recruited for.
Mayo was nasty. One of my favorites was Darrin Miller from the 85 team.
Funny story, I tutored this gorgeous girl in chemistry...she was fighting with her boyfriend a lot...convinced her I was a better option. After we were dating, found out her previous boyfriend was Darrin Miller. Looked over my shoulder frequently after that.![]()
