'14 Juco DT Jarran Reed

For the record, Dan McCullers is not and never should have been a DT. I know that's how we chose to get him on the field this year, but he's not. He's a prototypical NT 100% and will perform much better at that position in the future.

How do you figure. If you were starting a NFL team and you had Warren Sapp, Tony Siragusa and Dan standing next to each other, based on body type alone, which one would you pick to play NT? He plays to high to play the 0 technique.

Considering Sapp and Siragusa are old-ass retired dudes who have been out of the league for a minimum of 5 years, and that Sapp to the best of my knowledge never even played NT, there is no situation in which the answer to this question is not Dan.

I'm not even really sure how this question is germane to the Dan discussion, considering two 10+ year NFL veterans are being compared to a 21 year-old who's basically played a season and a half of big time college ball. Not similar in any way. Dan is good at drawing double teams. That's what NTs do. He will make it in the league and he will be developed by someone that actually has use for a guy his size. In our current defensive scheme, that's not us.

If Big Dan were drafted by the Patriots it would be a good fit for him. Don't care for the Pats but CBB is a great coach and as far as learning how to use his size to his advantage, know one veteran could teach him better than Vince Wilfork.

Patriots' tears are delicious.

Go Panthers!

yea but the patriots run lots of 4 man surfaces these days.. maybe Arizona or San Fran or Pittsburgh

Pete Carroll also likes to run some 3-4 looks in Seattle and he's notorious for acquiring 3-4 personnel to run the 4-3. Unlike Sal, however, he seems to make the mismatch work there.

Per VQ....

He has no leaders. Visited Ole Miss two weeks ago and OV'd to Mississippi State last weekend. Relationship with position coach important to him. Also, academics important. Team is undefeated (11-0) and has a stout defense.

Hope we land him.

I think Tennessee is still in a good position here, but certainly Ole Miss has come on strong and I think he wants to take an official visit to Alabama.

A huge part of football, ESPECIALLY at the highest level, is mindset, attitude, aggressiveness, want-to and Dan has none of that. And that is probably what mostly leads to his poor technique. No drive. No killer instinct. He is one of the those guys that plays football because his physical attributes lead to everybody pushing him to play. Telling him him 'look at you, you have to play'. He will get discarded pretty quickly in the NFL.

Agreed. Although if he DOES find a motor somehow, I can see him being successful.

I've been saying this for a while now. He had 2 games where he showed that he can be dominant. That was when he showed a little effort. He has a grand total of 2 tackles the last 2 games. 2 TACKLES. Not TFL.

And don't give me this "he is a big man and gets tired easy" nonsense. He isn't tired on the first or second play of the game!! Why can't he play with effort at least for a few plays??

To me, other than perhaps Malone, he's the most important player left on the board.

I honestly think Reed is #1 in my book.

We need big uglies that are ready to go in the worst way. That's not to say I wouldn't love to have Malone too.

Need to have a little "want to" to play any position. Dan has virtually none. His film will indict him when the NFL scouts start putting together their draft boards. If he gets drafted and makes an NFL roster I don't see any way makes an impact and hangs around the league very long if he doesn't find a way to tap into something that gives him some effort and energy.... he sure hasn't found a way to do that here.

Or volnation.com/mobile if that doesn't work. Didn't realize non-iPhones could use it or I would have suggested it as well.

Not if you are going to answer in a ridiculous manner. I mean, I suppose that you could assume that I am considering Sapp and Goose at their current age, but then we would have to question whether you are mentally disabled. Or, you could use logic and reason and deduce that I am comparing them as they were when they played in college and the NFL. The point being that Dan is not a prototypical NT. You are assuming that because he is big he is better suited for NT, and I am simply challenging this position. Dan is not underperforming because he is playing out of position. He under performed last year and has this year as well. He is big, but he lacks the fire to play in the trenches. He plays upright and is easy for a center or gaurd to get under and freeze at the line.

I'm assuming that since you state that Dan is good at drawing double teams that you have a breakdown of statistics confirming this to be the case? Whether some NFL team will get production out of him is yet to be seen. You have a positive outlook, I think he will quickly be out of the NFL. We'll see.
