'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Dews is having a great year. I like him alot...but there are bigger fish wanting to get in the pan. Still needs to grey-shirt.

I don't get the fascination everyone has with greyshirting guys. If you want him, take him. You're just delaying his count a year, and then you run into the same numbers problem the next year when you are trying to sign as many top guys as possible. You think recruiting will take a dip next year and we will just have a bevy of empty spots to fill? It should continue to rise...

I think in certain situations it can help if you really want a guy but you don't really see him contributing his freshman year. You delay his entry without it costing a redshirt year. I agree it delays the numbers problem, doesn't fix it.

Because if it comes down to him or Josh Malone, Jones has to do what he has to do.

I don't get the abhorrent reaction of some to the idea. Had a young kid(16) come to camp that Butch and staff felt had great potential. Offered the kid a scholarship, and most agreed then (Fort and Hubbs included I believe) that he was a greyshirt candidate. Gives the kid that just turned 17 a chance to catch up in age and body maturity. I only support greyshirting if they told him from the beginning, you can't spring it on him in November or December.

The recruiting will continue to rise with success in recruiting and on the field. We need help now. Nothing wrong with deferring a very young kid to the 2015 class if you told him when he committed that it could/would probably happen. We know we can only sign 30 this year, and no where near that next year at the moment. But it gives more players like Dallas and Posey, who are not going to get PT, to realize it and transfer opening up spots in 2015 for Dews and others.

We love ya Jerome. Just got nothing better to do than worry about all the studs we're bringing in. None of us are making decisions. Can't wait to see you flying off the edge! :hi:

Love to see the kid stand up for himself!

Hope like hell this under appreciated kid is a Vol!

His stats are ridiculous. He's going to come in with a chip on his shoulder and he'll have the opportunity to redshirt, physically develop, and learn the system. Its going to be a culture shock for our defense to not (hopefully) have different coaches this off season for once.

I am curious to see how this one plays out. With numbers where they are, obviously a GS for Dews was a strong possibility at some point as all the services mentioned it. Until yesterday his other options were james madison, deleware, and hampton. It's interesting he did not publicly say he would not take a GS until he got the offer from purdue. He may not take a GS offer now that he has another decent option.

This kid is not going to play WR is he? That was a troll job, right?

nope that quote came from Dews himself

Much to Dews’ pleasure, coach Ronnie Crump slots him at just about every position on the field, where he can lay a hit on just about anybody. Dews was originally recruited by the Volunteers to play outside linebacker, but has since been told he will likely play receiver in the Southeastern Conference. Crump, meanwhile, regularly rotates the 6-foot-4, 200 pound athlete between linebacker, receiver, cornerback, defensive end and tight end.
