'14 TN DB Rashaan Gaulden (UT Signee 2/5/14)

6'3'' 220 is different then 6'3'' 240. Twenty lbs of muscle. Jalen needs to keep hitting the weights, no doubt about that.

I agree but the extra speed, err velocity, adds to the force of impact delivered. Jalen is much faster and likely is far faster at the point of initial acceleration than Henry. I haven't seen Henry listed at 240 though it wouldn't surprise me. Jalen has a lot to learn still, more muscle to add, and is still just a true frosh himself but I still think he's too damn hard to tackle for it to be a good measure.

Regardless of weight/speed though, both are nightmares for even elite players to take down, especially those at safety. Using that as a standard seems way too high of a bar even though I'd LOVE to see him do it.

I meant to respond to this earlier but I'm not quite sure that tackling Hurd should be a measure of how good he is although it would be fantastic if he could take him down without issue. Hurd's about the same size as Derrick Henry (who according to Bama's roster is 6'3' and 238). For reference Jalen's listed on UT'sroster as (6'3' and 221). Hurd's 40 is listed at 4.37 while Henry's is listed at 4.72 and 4.52. Also, I could be wrong but I don't doubt that both have added weight that may not be reflected in their respective roster stats.

Likewise both really enjoy punishing whoever's trying to tackle them. And for Hurd, they've been trying to teach him to be more careful about his body but it's been remarked upon more than once since he's been here and the same is true for Henry.

Per a Bama LB on this spring (there have also been numerous articles on it):

They're both big boys that are hard as hell to take down, imo. Any speedy RB their size is gonna be difficult to tackle even if you're good at bring others down.

I didn't say it was the sole measure. His weight is a Concern. And a valid one in the sec

My bad then. :toast: I totally misread you and thought that was your primary measure rather than one of many.

I agree with you that weight is a concern, he's small enough to where it could very much be a factor, and I'd like him to add more but I will say sometimes little guys understand the factors that go into taking someone down. Obviously, those guys are rare though and there's no telling whether or not he's one of them.

It shouldn't be terribly hard for him to add 10-15 lbs given our nutritionist and S&C program and I hope he does. We're extremely lucky to have a full-time nutritionist on staff - one of only handful of programs that do.

As in "Evil Doctor Pork Chop"?

I like this definition better than the one to which the OP who used it meant. HAM is an acronym for hard as a mofo. We'll see. I was impressed with Henry but an OU defense that wasn't prepared for him may be a bit different than an SEC one that is - at least in terms of him breaking off super long runs. Even so, he scares me as he should be good for a lot of yards regardless and is hard as hell to bring down.

I'm telling you fellas, by the time this boy gets some mass on him, he's gonna be an elite safety.

Oh, and he's very confident, as he should be, that he can beat out Moseley. Moseley got a jump by being an EE but Rashaan feels he can close and over take in short order. We shall see.

I want him at CB. Size, speed, cover skills, and he'll account for 63% of our teams tackles this year too.

From his mouth he's playing corner and learning nickel as well. I think safety may be in the plan somewhere along the road as well but that's more speculation than from him

I could see him and Evan locking down corner and nickel playing time this year over Moseley and Coleman. Jmo.

If he progresses at CB like I think he can he will be a future AA and will be playing on Sundays...not a doubt in my mind. He's gonna be great.
