He really just said all show they'd play the interview and he just said "I will get to it tomorrow" with 3 mins left in his show. What a tool Hooker is

That's all college is, connections. I had a buddy get to pharmacy school with a 3.2 GPA. How? Because he did research for ETSU and got in with the right people. People with the right title can help you in more ways then you know.

Yep. Networking, learning how to interview well and sell yourself to whoever makes the hire/fire decisions is what's valuable.

I have worthless degrees, but they did give me those skills and they've served me very well.

This all day ^^^^^ Just as an example, I work in Civil Engineering and would take a person with an Engineering degree from UT ALL DAY over one with and Engineering degree from Vandy. Not even close.

This. I've worked in power industry as a project controls consultant for most of my career (Nuclear & Fossil) and I've heard that for engineering in this state Tn Tech is the winner, believe it or not. Of course that was a decade or so ago back when we had a winning FB program at UT.

The thing with Vandy is that if you went there people get the initial idea that you are either smart or rich so I find it strange that the FB pitch is about how few players in college actually make it to the NFL. Forget the NFL play at Vandy? I mean if you are a top notch player and you buy that pitch then that Vandy degree isn't ever going to lead people to believe you are very smart.

In Tennessee, the road to the NFL runs through UT!!

You just can't compare a candy degree with one you can get from UT

"Dont let school get in the way of your education" who said this? so true

A degree is only a piece of paper in the market! Wouldn't trade my time on the hill for any other school!

Vandy is living in the past. It's not about the school on the diploma anymore. It's about networking, connections, visibility, who you know, and experience. Going to vandy doesn't automatically equal greatness

Anecdote: I was hired over a Vandy grad with a TTU degree in civil engineering. TTU is still more highly regarded than UT, with Vandy a distant 3rd in the state.

Of course, I'm not biased or anything... :whistling:

Once had a vandy fan at a preds game tell me I was "selling myself short" by getting an engineering degree from UT. Never forgot that woman. How wrong she was is simply hilarious.

Depends on the major honestly. They (TTU) lost their Industrial Engineering program..

The university you attend is overrated. I've hired and fired dozens of people in the IT and Engineering fields. A few years ago, I selected a new ETSU grad over Vandy and UT grads. Not because I have something against UT ... the ETSU kid came prepared to the interview and wanted to work his ass off. And he did for several years. Give me a great attitude and strong work ethic any day of the week.

And once you gain some experience in the field, the school you attended means absolutely Jack. It's what you know, how you interview, and how hard you're willing to work. That's a fact.

i was fortunate enough to make it through school a couple times. but my closest friend is a vandy grad as his frat brothers were too. he graduated near the top of his class, as did his brother. my bro in law graduated from ttu in engineering (civil) and of course went on to pursue that with young life.

my pt is i was forunate to bump into a bunch of cats that went on to advanced (medical) degrees and pursued them in board of regents schools.

my family all attended ut. in an advanced capacity.

ill say this. not once has it ever been asked post doctorally or in advanced practice where one graduated. that's in practice. not in schooling.

one's initiative, brightness, acuity, personality in an interview and contacts got them where they are. each is level headed and working class. and you'd never ever pick the doc's, medical mal lawyers, masters, phd's, engineers, or architects in a crowd of our social circles.

doesnt matter in real life guys. work ethic is numero uno. again not sayin im any different than anyone else. im outlying the schooling end of things. opportunities also are different for most folks, i get that

Here's the irony: you'll spend YEARS paying off that pseudo-Ivy education you received at Vanderbilt. And you'll most likely be earning the same living as the UT or ETSU or TTU grad.

It's a shame kids don't hear this story from 'real' people.

I'd agree with you in principle but disagree on this point in that I believe being at Vandy puts you in a better position to make high end connections and network with alums. I think the average vandy student is a higher quality student than the average UT student. This often translates into more successful alums and thus more connections and opportunities. Some firms only recruit at certain schools. If my brother, for instance, had gone to UT over private school he would not have the job he has now, since that firm only recruits at three top private schools.

That said, a football player is not an average student. Back to Barnett. I think he's a vol. Would be nice to get a pipeline into BA

brother i didnt graduate from vandy. re-read. i went to a tennessee state school. as did my family. had friends that attented wake, stanford, and candy. the candy grads are down to earth (those that have to work) do and work hard.those that dont have too are miserable and live off of a family trust, and we blue collars (yea blue collars) separate ourselves from the unreslistic lifestyle.

now barnett we need dlinemen

Meh. Depends on your career. I get your point about law and medical careers. But there aren't 17,000 law and medical students running around Vandy's campus. You'll mostly find teachers and engineers and computer science and other such majors. I can't come up with justification for majoring in education and paying Vandy prices. Just crazy.
