'14 TX DE Dimarya Mixon (UT commit 11/9/13)

He didn't commit until after he left town, but I am wondering if for some reason Mixon as a late qualifier is not a "counted" player in the 2014 class. Any lawyers out there?

Mercy, this numbers thing is confusing. But like the poster said above, CBJ said 30, so there ya go.

from what I can tell, Butch is looking to upgrade speed and athleticism at every position...He knows that he can add size and strength to these kids when they get here, but you can't make them fast and athletic. In 2 yrs we will have an extremely aggressive attacking defense, with speed everywhere.

Actually, one former Vol did improve his speed in the NFL. I had an old video from SI on speed. One segment was about Bill Bates. Some trainer with the Cowboys put Bill through a training regiment called Over-Speed Training. At the time, it was pretty much experimental, but in Bates case, it worked. It made a huge difference in his pro career. However, I haven't heard of it being used much since then.

I just wonder if Jones and Bates have had a talk about that. If not, they really might need to do lunch sometime.

It's a chain reaction from previous classes that determines how many we can backcount to the 2013 class. Where that chain reaction starts (2007/8/9/10/11???) is the part that isn't entirely clear to just about anyone.

You can only go back count 1 year so those other classes don't matter. Loophole maybe EE's, since the 25 per year rule just came into effect last year. But, since these EE's will sign in December 2013, can they be back counted to 2012, instead of the signing day enrollees that can only go back to the 2013 class since signing day is in 2014. It's something that wasn't made clear.

I think this article addresses this issue very well.

How can UGA sign 30-35 recruits under the SEC’s new over-signing rules? | AJC College Sports Recruiting

Paul Harris,Lemond Johnson, Corey Vereen, Riyahd Jones, Jalen Reeves-Maybin enrolled early and could count toward 2012 class. That would give us 16 that signed for 2013 class. We can sign 25 for 2014 and back count 9. We are allowed to sign 34 this year as long as total under 85.

You forgot that we technically also go Jonathan Johnson as well in that class. He was just a late signee. So that means we can sign 33 if your estimates are correct

Seems like recruiting services slow down or stop evaluating recruits when they commit to a school. Since he committed to Nebraska in February and then committed to us almost a year later, is there a chance Mixon is a lot better than what recruiting services are saying?

"It was a trip I was looking forward to but actually getting down here and sitting with coach Jones really sealed the deal for me," Mixon offered.

"I had a great time," Mixon said. "Just knowing I have a chance to be a part of this program that's turning around, I think it's a great thing. I've got two more months and it's going to fly by so I'm looking forward to it."

"Just really getting to sit down with the coaches and the players and everything," Mixon said. "The game didn't turn out how everyone thought but it's a rebuilding program and that's they big thing. I'm just glad I get to be a part of that."

"This is it for me. I'm kind of glad the process is over. I have two months until school starts so I just want to get enrolled and get down here," Mixon said.

Posted in another thread, but I'm pretty sure you can back count any "medical scholarships" from this year immediately to the '14 class, though Meredith is the only one I'm aware of this year. That's one more slot.

Dude is solid, if this is true and he did in fact accept a GS, that would indicate that he really wants to be here no matter what. I like it.

I think he meant this fall he was "gray shirting" since he didn't go to school anywhere.
