Only chance IMO is IF Jefferson picks OSU. Maybe the staff takes Gibson as a WR then. Depending on what DT/DE/OL/CB/LB options are out there, the staff may decide to pass altogether. May come down to just how true the rumors of "issues" are.

Gibson's being compared to Andre Johnson at WR and Vince Young / Michael Vick at QB, but you're still characterizing him as a backup plan at both positions. Again, recruiting isn't done on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our backup plans at those positions are already committed...

Exactly.. TG will never be a back up plan. He's too good.

Gibson to compete in the finals at the Elite 11

Gibson was a late addition to the field. He is expected to line up at wide receiver during The Opening, which immediately follows Elite 11 finals in Oregon, but will compete with passers beforehand.

His success came on the run and through the air last fall, as Gibson gained 1,063 yards on the ground and threw for 1,789 yards. He totaled 29 touchdowns during a state title run in 2013...

...Gibson, rated the No. 1 "athlete" in 247Sports' composite rankings, has a chance to state his case as a quarterback prospect...

...Gibson is a leader who views himself as a playmaker behind center at the next level and intends to start his collegiate career at the position. Under the tutelage of several well-respected quarterback coaches, expect him to pick up significant points for improvements as a passer.

~Tyler Donohue

That's from a few days ago, so it may have changed again by now. More recently, I've read that he will not compete in the competition, but will take part in the exercises. I guess we will know, for certain, soon.

Recruits to Watch at The Opening

The 6'4", 200-pounder will show off his all-around athleticism, but keep an eye on him at quarterback. He's raw, but good enough to be recruited as a signal-caller by several SEC schools including Auburn, Tennessee and LSU. Wherever he goes, he will likely be given a shot at quarterback first before considering other options like wide receiver.

Why You Should Watch: If he shows that he's progressed as a passer and polished up his mechanics, it could further solidify him as a quarterback prospect rather than an athlete.

Torrance Gibson just reiterated that he will not work out at WR during @TheOpening2014 - said his ankle will prohibit him from doing so.

Elite 11 Buzz: Tennessee Pursuing Torrance Gibson Hardest, 'Ton of Potential' - Video

Says he is #1 on Tennessee's big board and his performance is showing why he is #1 on the board.

Gibson getting very high praise from the media @ the Elite 11.

Seriously - all a person has to does is objectively watch him and you know he can play the position with more experience and instruction. Tremendous athlete that will only get better as a QB. The negativity on here amazes me at times.

Butch owes it to UT, the team, the fans, and himself/staff to constantly look to upgrade every position every year. The internal competition will determine the guys that get playing time. So if that means 3 QBs in this class, so be it.

I wonder why Gibson got an invite to the Elite 11?

I wonder why he is working to improve his QB mechanics?

I wonder why some people are reporting positive things about him?

I am confused. I thought he wasn't a QB and had very little skill at the position. It also makes little sense that almost everywhere you look it says UT is still pursuing him hard and at QB.

I guess it's all smoke screens and it must be a Gibson clone.

Yea, this should answer all the crap about him not wanting to compete at these camps. He is at the biggest and most publicized QB camp in the country. Not sure we get him but hope we do.

As soon as McKenzie commits Thursday, TG will pop out behind that massive 6'4 350 frame and commit to the Vols giving us the best boom day of our lives

Spoke with a friend yesterday who happens to be a recruiting analyst for one of the major sites. He thinks UT leads for TG with tOSU running second and AU also in the mix. He thinks TG could be a very good DT QB or WR, but thinks he would be better served at Safety. Says TG covers the whole field, breaks to the ball quickly, and reads the field extremely well. He is not saying TG is being recruited as a Safety, only that Safety may be his best position. TIFWIW
