We will be more than OK without TG. I will take a pocket passer right now with the weapons we have on offense. What's the point in having all of these weapons if we are not going to use them?
I don't know where people got this idea that WRs aren't utilized by dual-threat QBs. If anything, the extra attention in the box required to contain a running QB opens up WRs for more single-coverage and deep balls.
Here are the passing stats for some recent DT college QBs. See how they compare against the stats for famous NFL pocket passing QBS, and pay close attention to the yards per attempt averages and passer ratings:
Pocket Passers:
Peyton Manning (1997) - 3819 yds, 8.0 Y/A, 36 TDs, 11 Ints, 147.7 rating
Drew Brees (2000) - 3668 yds, 7.2 Y/A, 26 TDs, 12 Ints, 132.6 rating
Eli Manning (2003) - 3600 yds, 8.2 Y/A, 29 TDs, 10 Ints, 148.1 rating
Matt Ryan (2007) - 4507 yds, 6.9 Y/A, 31 TDs, 19 Ints, 127.0 rating
Dual-threat QBs:
Vince Young (2005) - 3036 yds, 9.3 Y/A, 26 TDs, 10 Ints, 163.9 rating
Tim Tebow (2007) - 3286 yds, 9.4 Y/A, 32 TDs, 6 Ints, 172.5 rating
Cam Newton (2010) - 2854 yds, 10.2 Y/A, 30 TDs, 7 Ints, 182.0 rating
Johnny Manziel (2013) - 4114 yds, 9.6 Y/A, 37 TDs, 13 Ints, 172.9 rating
If I was a WR like Josh Malone or Preston Williams, I'd much rather play with a DT QB that keeps safeties occupied and leaves me alone in single coverage all game. Much like the elite DT QBs listed above, Torrance Gibson is going to give defensive coordinators NIGHTMARES in college...
Do you know how many passing attempts per game for the Pro-style versus the DT QBs?
P Manning 1997 477
Brees 2000 521
E Manning 2003 441
Ryan 2007 654
Young 2005 155
Tebow 2009 314
Newton 2010 280
Manziel 2013 429
Would you rather be thrown to more often for fewer yards, or have few opportunities?
I personally would like to see a DT QB, but if I was a receiver, I would definitely prefer more opportunities.
I would rather score the same amount of tds or more and win bigger. The pocket passers didn't win as many games as the DT qbs. Its not even close.
That's a good correlation right there.
But not the 'whole' story that lead to those Natty's.
So you're saying it's a coincidence? I disagree.
2013 FSU wins with a PS QB (only rushed for 219 yards the entire 2013 regular season)
2011 & 2012 Alabama wins with PS QB
2010 Auburn wins with DT QB
2009 Alabama wins with PS QB
2008 Florida wins with DT QB
2007 LSU wins with PS QB
2006 Florida wins with PS QB
2005 Texas wins with DT QB
2004 USC wins with PS QB
I would say that the ProStyle QBs still have their place in winning championships.
Winston is still a duel threat. You don't have to run all the time. Hence the "threat" part. McCarron was a game manager with a team with way more talent than anyone else. UF doesn't win without dt Tebow off the bench in short yardage. Leinart had Bush and a whole unch of NFL talent. The teams that won based on the qb carrying them all had DT qbs.

Anyway bottom line is signing TG and actually putting him at QB is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. With Hurd, Kamara, Scott, North, Malone, P Willy etc on the field we need a distributer, period. Dobbs will be lethal if he developes his passing game to go with his ability to leave the pocket as a last resort combined with all the weapons. Perfect fit IMO. As for TG, sign him and use him like CP, crazy athletic return man/ WR/ end around reverse pass whatever.
