'15 FL QB/WR/DB (anything he wants) Torrance Gibson

The same posters saying they don't want this guy are the same posters that will be complaining when he routs us playing for Auburn over the next 4-5 years. The idea that a true dual threat QB doesn't fit in at Tennessee precisely explains why we've had such little success over the last 6 years. Football is changing, and Tennessee needs to jump on the bandwagon and embrace that change. I sure hope TG doesn't end up at Auburn. Malzahn would have a field day with this kid 's ability.

Which is where I believed he would end up early on. Now I am not as sure. The wheel already exists at the Barn and with some work with Mahlzahn it will probably roll smoothly with TG at the helm if he gets the nod. Butch is still building the wheel with our guys. A DT or mobile passer is the way Butch's offense works best. Been watching his over the last half dozen years. He does it differently than Mahlzahn, but the goal of running the ball 60% of the time is similar. You need a DT or a more mobile QB to do that with the most efficiency.

Post elite 11 day 1 critique

Torrance Gibson is the proverbial "what if..." prospect and today showed both his strengths and his areas of opportunity at quarterback. He's got the frame, the size, the speed and the release to be a dangerous player in a short-passing attack offense or a spread-option set that utilizes his athleticism.

Unfortunately for Gibson, as the day went on and the routes required a more polished passer, his inconsistency throwing the football became more and more evident. If he puts things together and focuses on being a quarterback, he can be a good one.

Sure, a little...but when Farrell (who deals with these kids on a daily basis) calls him out like that, it makes him seem like he is above and beyond a little immaturity.

Kid just makes a bad impression on almost everyone he meets. I'm not being a "Gibson hater" it's just the truth.

If that's the case then why does our coaching staff like him so much?

True Drop back QB's are slowing going away to a Hybrid QB that is capable of making several big plays a game with their feet. Still have to make all of the throws but will also need to be a force with their legs

BEAVERTON, Ore. — The recruitment of Torrance Gibson is close to reaching its finality.
At 6-feet-4, 204 pounds, the American Heritage (Fla.) High School standout has ample ability to play a number of positions and excel. However, his skill set makes him a weapon at quarterback and makes sure the play-maker touches the ball at every snap, which is why he’s one of the most coveted prospect in the nation for the 2015 signing class and a five-star.
The left-handed QB has already logged quite a bit of time this calendar year familiarizing himself with the top schools on his list of favorites. Gibson has three official visits in mind and intends to take all five of the allotment “just to build the relationship. ‘I don’t want to talk about football. Let’s talk about something else.’”
One school the Plantation, Fla., native says will get one of those officials is Tennessee. A major reason why the Volunteers are in the hunt to get Gibson’s signed National Letter of Intent is second-year coach Butch Jones.
“He’s a great coach, man, no doubt about it,” said Gibson, who is being recruited as a quarterback by the Orange & White.
Tennessee lost a quarterback this spring due to transfer, Justin Worley graduates after the 2014 season. The goal is to have ample talent at the most important position in team sports.
“I think everyone believes in Coach Jones plan,” Gibson said.
“I feel comfortable with him. I feel comfortable talking with him. I can talk about anything around him. I really feel comfortable with coach Jones.”

Sounds like we got our QB of the future to me.....

Then again maybe we already do, and maybe he has already verbally committed

To add to this, there was a video attachment with a nee interview with Danny Parker. Said he is learning from Deondre Francois on being a QB (oh the irony!) while he is at the Elite 11. Is looking forward to being recruited by other players at the opening. The one player, if he could choose anyone to play with, is Kahlil McKenzie. Says Butch is different than the other coaches, such as Coach Miles, Coach Meyer, Coach Malzahn, etc. in terms of how comfortable he makes recruits feel around him. He is completely adamant about playing QB.

Based off a few clips, he needs a lot of work on footwork and release. He said he has really been working on footwork at elite 11, as the coaches have said that is his biggest area for improvement

I think his release is actually one of his strengths fwiw.

The only reason they don't want Gibson is because by some crazy toilet dream they think Gibson isn't coachable at the position. Clearly he wants to learn and has gone to the E11 to be taught.

I fail to see any problem with this what so ever.

I will be happy if we get Gibson but I can't say that I'm happy on how he's handled the recruiting process so far. He does seem to like the attention a whole lot and I understand this a once in a lifetime opportunity for him, but he could still be more mature about it. Like I said, hopefully Butch will straighten out his attitude and I'll be behind Gibson 100% if he comes here.

Does anyone see Torrance staying at one school for his whole college career? I get the feeling that he likes attention too much (Farrell obviously pointed that out) and he will want to be recruited again after the allure wears off. There are reasons that a lot of schools backed off of him or "reevaluated" his recruitment like Hubbs said.

Everyone talks about how great his athleticism is but that does no good if he has severe character issues. I also don't want his commitment as a QB to affect the QB's we already have committed ala Jennings and Dormady.

There are just a lot of red flags about this recruitment process and I can see him ending up somewhere like UCF.

His whole college career? Nah... he'll still have 2 years to play 1 when he leaves for the NFL Draft.

So because a 17 year old kid seems to like attention means he has severe character issues? How so? And how does any of those things affect his talent on the field? One could say that Johnny Mandouche had character issues yet it didn't seem to affect him any.

Let me preface by saying I don't want to lose QD or JJ. That being said, here is the problem. If Gibson signs with us and is given the chance to compete at QB, then all of them should be excited and look forward to the competition. Competition brings out the best in competitive players. If either QD or JJ feel they need to go elsewhere because the coaches feel we need another QB, then that would show immaturity and a fear of competition. We don't need guys like that.

I don't think QD or JJ would leave if Gibson comes in at QB. I think they would all compete and the best guy wins out. Also you may think teams "backed" off of him but that's just highly unlikely. If Gibson wanted to commit right now, I would bet most D1 teams would take him in a split second.
