'15 GA DB Yaquis "Duke" Shelley

People are star gazing too much.

Let butch & the coaching staff do what they feel is best. All kinds of people were freaking out last year when we were passing on some pretty highly rated DL early in the process & we end up with a class full of even higher rated kids.

Another question. 4* top 200. Why didn't we just go with it?

Recruiting sites screw up sometimes. This kid is listed as 5-10 but is in reality closer to 5-8. The rankings on him are bullish, hence why his offer sheet doesn't match his supposed "Top 200" ranking. Only Rivals ranks him as a 4*.

Yeah. What I don't understand is, why not just go with it for now, even if you aren't 100% sure you want him? I mean, what does having an extra commitment really hurt at this stage vs. risking alienating a guy who you may want and looking bad to others in the process? Commitments can always be quietly advised to look elsewhere or encouraged to greyshirt down the line if you end up not wanting him or having too many DBs come signing day a year from now.

LV is going to read this and hate you.

IMO there are several reasons not to just go with it. One would be the staff could very well be telling recruits how many CBs they plan to take in this class(my guess is 2). If one is "public", then recruits could very well start looking elsewhere vs keeping UT in their top group. Another reason would be it's not fair at all to the kid. One thing I noted from the last class is if the staff accepts the commitment, it's just about a sure thing they will be in the class if they qualify. Mouhon may be an exception and he may not. Not 100% sure if he was asked to look around or if he did so on his own. If he tripped to cinci on his own and it cost him his spot, I have no issue with it. Trying to force a kid to take a GS who thought he had a scholarship is about as shady as it gets IMO and should never be a plan unless the kid knows about it from the jump(Like Dews).

If the plan is to take (2) CBs in 2015, wait and take the (2) who can be Vols come NSD 2015. JMO

And for the record, I don't hate you.

Not taking him was a mistake IMHO. IDK how you pass on his potential at DB and return specialist.

This must signal we are in good position for some prospects much higher on our board and that we will have extremely limited space. OR it could be Butch wants to keep him but build momentum with his commitment in some way.

Never heard this before, Butch likes to build momentum with commitments??

The obvious answer is that Butch wanted Duke's commitment to be on his terms. There really doesn't need to be any more discussion on this.

My guess is that the staff wants to get all of their corner prospects into camp for an evaluation and go from there.

We also seem to be targeting tall, long corners.
Fine by me, as long as they are fast and physical

5'8 is just not tall enough unless you are just an athletic freak. Not saying Duke isn't by the way.

He's definitely an athletic freak IMO. Elite speed and quickness. I know he's short but I'd take him over a few of the other current commits of similar size.

I'm not trying to debate that number of CBs or DBs we will take this class. I'm not even sure what number of players we will be able to take in general. But I just hope this kid sticks around in case we decide we do need him. I honestly think we should have just taken him.

The kid wants to be a vol. I would rather have a kid that wants to be a vol, over a kid who may or may not be better...who has "better" size and is on the fence about it.

Then again, we still have almost a full year to talk kids off of the fence. This post is now pointless, i'm posting it anyway. Butch gets it...I've not yet convinced myself that I do.

Agreed. Want to measure them themselves. Can't trust want prospects and coaches put on those sheets. I think their preference is taller CB for other CB spot. Ugo Amadi has the other spot.

Also as others have said Tucker HS is not one to get on naughty list with by dropping a player last minute that has been committed for a while. Better to wait than to take now and worry about consequences later.

What are you doing on volnation Coach Saban?

What Butch is doing up there scares the crap out of me. Just keeping tabs on the new recruiting class. I don't want to keep getting embarrassed going after the name recruits at Butch, and them continue to ignore my phone calls. Have a nice day. Go Big Orange...errr Roll Tide?
