I want to give a quick shout-out to all of the know-it-alls across the Internet who think we have no idea how to do our jobs. Thanks. You guys are the best.
To all of those people, here's the deal: There's no official commitment to report at this time. If there is, we'll let you all know about it. But a tweet from a prospect doesn't make a commitment official. We're doing our jobs and being thorough in our reporting, and we have not received official confirmation that Shelley has committed.
As of about a half-hour ago, Shelley still hadn't talked to a full-time member of UT's staff.
Hey guys, on Duke Shelley...
Hey guys, we know everyone is wondering why he haven't added a front page story or sent out a text alert and as always we are just trying to cover this as thoroughly as possible. Right now, we are waiting to see how this plays out.
Shelley hasn't talked to everyone he needs to talk to at Tennessee, including the head coach, and that's why there's some hesitancy with this situation right now. We do believe this will be resolved tomorrow morning or afternoon and we should know more about where everything stands then.
Woody has a story from Shelley and Shelley told him he talked to a few at Tennessee, but he hasn't talked to everyone yet. We will wait until the morning to see how this plays out.
Is he a take right now?
"As of right now I'm not sure. I know a lot of people worry about his size but obviously if nothing is official a couple of hours after a kid says he commits there's a chance everyone at Tennessee wasn't ready to take his commitment."
- Fortenberry
Ahh gotcha. He didn't post on VQ until just now. Sounds like Duke forgot to talk to Butch first. Hope this doesn't turn out to be one of those really embarrassing situations where the kid isn't allowed to commit after tweeting and giving stories to recruiting sites.
If this is still the case tomorrow we know there may be something wrong. All we really know is that the guys close to UT haven't stamped it as official yet, simply because they are waiting for official word from the staff. And I agree we should take him, however most will probably agree that we are only taking two CBs next year. At the very least it gives them ample time to "politely" remove him later on in the process (like we presumably saw with Lawrence Lee & Dominique Booth) if they decide other guys higher on the board, ala Ugo Amadi, Mark Fields II, Garrett Taylor, Stephen Giffin etc.We should absolutely take his commitment. Really confused as to why we haven't heard a consensus confirmation yet.
Also from Callahan:Vols are in it for some top cornerbacks, and while I love Shelley as a playmaker he is not near as physically ready as some of the other targets on their board. This is where twitter puts colleges in a tough situation publicly. They obviously like Shelley and have to make a tough decision whether or not to take him.
BTW I thought I rated Shelley long time ago but it must have not updated in system. It should be on his timeline now and will update on his profile soon.
2nd post:
I cannot confirm that this is what happened as I have not spoken to Shelley, but I can say I have seen several prospects over the past two years tweet a commitment only to see them later tweet (a) they have decided to open up their options or (b) openly express their frustration with things not going the way they planned. Definitely awkward for both parties when this occurs, although am NOT stating this is what is happening with Shelley.
Woody from Rivals (the guy who broke the commitment) also said to expect Shelly to be in the top 200 tomorrow when the rankings are updated.I wouldn't go that far just yet. It's not completely out of the question that Tennessee will end up taking him. Shelley is just going to have to talk to the Vols' coaches, probably tomorrow, before anything is decided
I just think Shelley was a little premature in sending out the tweet saying he had committed, and others were probably a bit premature in reporting it.
