Rivals.com Football Recruiting
SAN ANTONIO -- Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes four-star defensive end D'Andre Walker is one of nine prospects expected to declare their college intentions at Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl, but that will not be the end of his recruitment.
The 6-foot-3, 212-pound Walker said he will have three hats on the table and they will be for Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee. As of Monday, he was not 100 percent sure which hat he would be picking up on Saturday.
"I'm still thinking about everything," Walker said. "All my family members, they will support me wherever I go, but they just want to know that I will be taken care of."
Tennessee is the only one of those three Walker has officially visited, and he likes what they have to offer with regard to his planned major of Broadcasting.
"They just built something like ESPN at their facilities," Walker said.
Even after he announces his decision on Saturday, though, Walker plans to continue taking official visits. He has one set up to Auburn the weekend of Jan. 16 and also plans to take another to Georgia.
"I haven't set that one up yet," he said. "At Georgia I like the coaches and what they have been telling me about how they are going to help me get better.
"Auburn, I haven't been up there in a nice little minute. I just want to see what they have to offer and I have my questions written down at home."
One factor that will not determine which school he chooses is position. Although he could line up at defensive end or linebacker all three of his finalists are recruiting him for defensive end and he said no other schools will be added to his list before National Signing Day
I'm sure there are dozens of other examples who didn't put on that much weight though. I guess we'll see.
JRM has put on 40 lbs in less than 2 years while making the switch from S to LB. Walker is 2-3 inches taller, no reason to think he couldn't do something very similar.
Leonard Little would be another example.
Size isn't the issue with Walker. The kid has a big frame, and he has really good speed off th edge. Striker for OK is all of 220LBs and about 6' tall. He's an elite pass rusher off the edge. If Walker adds 25 pounds, he's at 250ish. That's plenty big enough to play DE effectively. No matter the position, Walker will be a very good player as long as he puts the work in.
He's put on 30. 240 would still be smallish for an SEC DE. I'm not saying it's not possible, just odd that he's so dead set on playing DE when he's so small.
And little was like 260
Little was a 210 pound LB and WR coming out of highschool. Was nowhere near 260 until after going to JUCO and getting in UTs S&C program. His first year at UT (1995) after spending a season at a JUCO, he weighed 220.... a year later in 1996 he was listed at 263. Point is, he was a phenomenal athlete, like Walker is said to be, and put on a ton of weight over time. Don't see why Walker couldn't do the same.
Also, JRM was 195 coming out of highschool....he's listed at 230 now, less than 2 years later. I still believe both he and Little are good examples for Walker.
Neither Little nor JRM planned on playing DE. Little ended up there, as did Maggitt because they put on a ton of weight. I'm just saying most 210 seniors don't plan on playing DE because they don't usually put on that much weight. Not saying it's impossible.
Hopefully we land Phillips/Amadi and all this will be moot. Phillips was owning Martez Ivey today... If I'm picking between Walker and Phillips, it's not close. But Walker is a really nice plan B.
I know he weighed in at 209, but I didn't catch his height.
Thanks for posting all the vines :hi:
