'15 GA RB Taj Griffin

Any updates on this guy? We arent even listed as having offered him on 247 or espn & Edoga has us as his leader? I thought they were a package deal? Am I missing something or is there just nothing new to report on him?

Griffin picked up an offer from Tennessee more than eight months ago and has been high on the Vols’ board since then, but they will face plenty of competition for him. Georgia, Ohio State and Oregon are believed to be among the early favorites to land Griffin, who also holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State and Notre Dame, among others. He’s a teammate of Top247 offensive lineman Chuma Edoga,

TAJ GRIFFIN RB, 5-10/170, POWDER SPRINGS, GA.

REASON FOR THE RANKING: Known as one of the fastest players in Georgia, Griffin gets to his top gear in a hurry. Speed separates Griffin from the rest of the pack both literally and figuratively. Ranked as the nation's No. 1 all-purpose back, he is small weighing in the 170-pound range, but his shiftiness and quickness make him a hard target to pin down for defenders.

THE SKINNY: Griffin seems to be only recently warming up to the Vols. Most believe Griffin is destined to end up a Bulldog at Georgia and as of earlier this month Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State were the three programs sticking out to him. But, he has recently talked about getting to Tennessee for one of the junior days in the near future and the Vols hope to have a chance to make a push with him in the coming months.

The folks at the adidas showcase must have hired the 40 timers from The Opening.
He actually ran a half step slower at the Nike combine (same guys who run the Opening) last March. Still the kid is undeniably one of the fastest running backs in this class.

Taj Griffin, RB (2015), (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern), 5-9, 171 pounds, 4.43 forty, 4.15 shuttle, 28.5' power ball toss, 40" vertical jump, 105.42 SPARQ

I was just making a joke about inflated 40 times.

I bet every single kid who ran a 40 today at the adidas showcase will run slower times at the NFL combine if they're so lucky to be invited in a few years.

exactly. people on here take 40 times to serious. its like if the kid isnt listed at a 4.5 or faster, they are slow. almost every one of these kids 40 times are incorrect. when it comes to real 40 times, a 4.6 is actually pretty fast. when I see these linemen listed at 4.7s and 4.8s I just laugh (even though there is a few that might crack a 4.8). Matt Elam running a 4.8 at almost 400 Lbs is just comical.

I read an article a while back on HS 40 times and NFL 40 times. Some kids were hugely slower than what they claimed in high school (no surprise), but the general conclusion is that they were on-average .1 second slower in the 40 after 3-4 years in a college S&C program. However I think like 25% recorded accurate times compared to their HS 40 time. Something like half the guys who ran under a 4.5 in high school were unable to run under a 4.5 at the combine. Not bad, all things considered. NFL combine also marks the time from when they get off the blocks, to the finish, as opposed to when the gun fires IIRC - meaning reaction time isn't attributed, like it is in all these camps but it shows how generous they (the NFL combine) are in their 40 times as well.

good straight line speed and good toughness. imo, I see him as a "one cut" type back. he kind of reminds me of m. hardesty.

Someone once posted Usain Bolt's 40 time based off his world record 100M time. It included his reaction time (meaning, the timer started when the gun fires) and each 10 yard split.

His initial 40 time (w/ reaction time)? 4.65

theres another thing that will seperate one kids 40 time from another. some places (schools, camps, etc.) have blocks, and some dont. I for one never ran a 40 using blocks. also for the places that do use blocks, the kids have to know how to use them properly

Can't really compare. Bolt is always slow at the beginning but makes up for it with his long strides.

lol you can't measure his last 40 yards....he is already at full speed. Most of your time in the forty yd dash is getting up to full speed. Its why quickness and technique is important and sometimes get overvalued when looking at 40 times. Running anything more than 40 for football is useless as its rare that a player does. A 40 time is just a good indicator of speed and quickness, but it's not a perfect system. Just like taking a IQ test is more likely to indicate a persons intelligence and therefore ability to learn quickly. Just like the 40 test, lots of people without high IQ's have become very successful and have other abilities that are so great that they make up for some shortcomings in other areas. However on average these tests are excellent at predicting success, but a good evaluator recognizes the outliers. But in the cases of outliers, these guys always have elite and unbelievable abilities in other areas to compensate for average to below average abilities in the most obvious area.

Also back to the point of this thread, Taj Griffin is fast. He won the FL night lights race last year as a sophomore beating out guys 1-2 years older than him. He blew everyone out of the water in the final as sophomore... You guys can debate 40 times and their validity all day, but results trump all. Taj Griffin is fast and the stop watch shows that, his film shows that, and he was the fastest guy at UF's Friday night lights event last year and whooped everyone. The kid has some wheels, hence why he is a 5 star guy despite being small. He has elite speed.

It was indoor soccer turf so yes the times were faster and they were with stopwatch. I saw six stopwatches with him at the 4.3 range. TJ Rahming was the fastest today at 4.35

It seems I read this article a year or so ago, and I remember it being much faster than that. Care to search for a link? :hi:
