Scott would have been 2nd string this year if the coaches thought he could handle it. I'm not writing him off completely by any means, but for him not to step up and contribute at all this year worries me.
We played a million freshman, but not him at our second biggest position of need. That says a lot to me.
I get what you're saying, but we haven't exactly had s running game the last few years that could carry the load.
I don't know the stats for teams that have been successful, but saying we don't need more than 2 high caliber backs based on the #3 back at UT the last three years is silly. That's like saying Barnett and maggitt has a lot of sacks and vareen didn't have many, so all we need is 2 solid DEs. We need, at a minimum, three backs that are SEC starter quality. Then maybe a #4 that's on the level of a marlin lane. Then you have your "bodies" in there to fill spots.
IMO 2 is just fine with the addition of RDAIV. Everyone knows Hurd and Kamara will get the majority of the carries. RSing 1 RB for 2015 IMO is just fine(whoever they take Reid/his replacement). Get 2 good ones next year and we are fine.
I myself think worrying about who your 5th, 6th, or 7th RB is just silly. If you have quality RBs 7 deep, they won't be around long if they are not getting carries. They will be looking at transfer options.
LSU makes a living off of rotating a multiple-back system. They sign elite RBs every year, that aren't beat up at the end of their college careers. Its an easy sell. You should see these backs man... In short yardage situations, they actually fall forward for 2 yards instead of back.![]()
I'm not saying it's not important to have a competent #3 RB ready to go. What I am saying is needing to take 3 in one class at least to me is just wasting scholarships. Especially when your likely #1 and #3 guys are already on campus and both have 2-4 years still to play.
We need to have a competent #4. By the end of the season, you hope to still have 2 guys at 95% or better. Signing high grade running backs is never a wasted scholarship. Look at Dooleys leftover JR and SR classes. Not all of them by any means, but a good portion of that is what you call wasted scholarships.
I wish he wasted scholarships on rivals 100 backs.
With RDAIV coming in as a transfer, there is your #4. IMO CBJ would not take him just to fill a roster spot for a year. PLUS you still have Pickett, whoever they take along with Kamara, Perry, and Bruce in an emergency.
I think where fans mess up is trying to build the entire roster depth in a single recruiting class. All it does is lead to transfers. And that IMO is the definition of a wasted scholarship as it was time used on a player you end up getting nothing out of.
RDA just isn't an SEC #4. Maybe I'm wrong. That is a scholly I think is a waste. Pickett is useless. Perry and Bruce aren't SEC running backs. Can the line up there for a screen twice a game? Yeah. But can you imagine if our 1-2 punch this year was Hurd and DY?
I totally agree. Would much rather have seen a slower but brushing Reid come in and smash somebody in relief than abother blown up dump pass to a wr sized scat back.
At 1 and done and our return guys doing well as is i'm meh about it. Now if he was an Olinemen then bring it.RDA will be a good player for us IMO. He can do a lot of different things. We'll probably see him returning some kicks and punts. He can line up in the slot or in the backfield. He's a lot better than Young or Pickett.
