'15 MI ATH John Kelly (UT Signee 2/4/15)

I expect Kelly to more touches than Abernathy. Abernathy will get Pig Howard or Pearson touches as in the feared jet sweep. Kelly can push for more as the season goes on I hope because I don't see Hurd going a full 12 games.

Agree. Doubt Abernathy is much more than a special teams guy and getting touch's after Hurd, Kamara and Kelly.

So you all are thinking more like this?

Main RB Carries (90% of total carriers)
1. Hurd - 45%
2. Kamara - 40%
3. Kelly - 15%
Change of Pace Carries (10% of total carries)
4. Abernathy - 80%
5. Bruce - 20%

Total Carry Breakdown (rounded some of the above numbers up/down)
1 - Hurd - 40%
2 - Kamara - 35%
3 - Kelly - 15%
4 - Abernathy - 8%
5 - Bruce 2%

If we average 30 running back carries a game (not counting QB runs or WR reverses)

Then it would breakdown like this for the regular season for the backs.

Hurd - 145 carries (12 per game)
Kamara - 125 carries (~11 per game)
Kelly - 55 carries (~5 per game)
Abernathy - 29 carries (~2-3 per game)
Bruce - 6 carries (3 in 2 games)

barring injury that sounds realistic. game situation could merit more carries for Kelly/Bruce if there are more blow outs than close games.

Hurd should be getting 18-20 carries a game IMO. He's the kind of back that gets better as the game goes on, and can take over in the 4th quarter. JMO of course.

Wow....that's very specific. Would love to see how close you were at the end of the season.

I agree I think Hurd should get at least 15 touches every game and Kamara should get at least 10. Only games they shouldn't have 25-30 carries between those two alone should be games we are way ahead at half.

I think 95% of all carries(that mean anything) will be Hurd, Karama, or Dobbs.

I have such mixed emotions about Dobbs running a lot this year since he's so much fun to watch run, however I also don't want to see him get hurt. Last year he had to run a lot because we pretty much only had Hurd, but know with Kamara and all if not most of the WR healed I hope he runs enough to keep the D's on their toes but not so much as he's getting pounded by LB's and safety's.

As long as those 3 are healthy, I think you're right. Our WRs will get more meaningful carries on those end arounds we love to run than the RBs behind Hurd and Kamara will get.

Well I think you all are confusing averages for what would happen every game.

Like many are saying hopefully the Vols will be in big lead situations about 5 times at least this season.

I could see Jalen only getting 8-10 carries or so in those type games (could still net 100 yards with those limited touches).

Then in the 6 big games He would have more in the 15-20 rushes area with 12-15 for Kamara.

Unless someone is completely shutting our offense down, I expect Hurd to get 6-8 carries a quarter. I expect Kamara to get 4-5 carries a quarter. Depending on who's got the hot hand that particular game, the carries could be the other way around. I expect a lot of sustained drive and not near as many 3 and outs. Even with only marginally better line play, the offense should be very hard to stop.

Abernathy won't play running back unless we find ourselves in some major, major doo doo and even then he'd probably only be used as a scat back.

Can't say I understand all the folks ready to assign significant carries to a miniature mid-major transfer?

What am I missing that is going to steal carries from our two 5-Star stud tailbacks currently on the roster :dunno:

FWIW, we averaged just over 40 carries per game last year including sacks. Our RB corps accounted for almost 64% of those carries, averaging a little under 26 totes per game, while our WRs had just 4% of the total carries.

Assuming our OL blocks better and our overall running game is improved with a fully healthy Hurd and the addition of Kamara, I think we can realistically look for 28-32 carries per game out of our RBs. If their YPC average is in the 5.0-5.5 range and Dobbs is as effective on the ground as he was last year, we could very well average over 200 yards per game rushing for the 1st time since 1998.

This

Assuming Hurd and Kamara remain un injured, there will be crumbs falling from the table for anyone else at RB

5 or so carries a game to give the main two a breather isn't significant.

Lane got 86 carries last year, so 60-70 carries to a guy that isn't an SEC caliber back is too many....

He will have 40 at best IMO
