'15 NC DT Shy Tuttle (UT commit 9/26/14)

Thanks for the nice run down

Your welcome. Let's see what MacK and Kirkland do today. Excited to see Townsend, hope he is the real deal. Damn Bammers punter is a game changer, we need that. Just gut feeling we will be watching Phillips closely after donning the T hat. I may be wrong but feel Butch has caused a lot of this so we get a hat on tv. VN if he chooses elsewhere wish him luck and move on, don't go full tard.

Owen Williams will be back too.

Edit: and Mixon.

Mixon played DE during the game yesterday. Will be worth keeping an eye on in the spring to see if that's a permanent move or just a move for depth in the bowl game.

Personally, I think it would be big for us if Mixon could play SDE, especially with KMac, Tuttle, and Picou coming in and us losing Hendrix and Miller. The path to playing time/making an impact seems clearer for him at DE.

I think at this point, you just have to hope that you can get 4-5 games out of Saulsberry next year. Hopefully ones against power running teams.

I don't think Saulsberry plays another down unfortunately. Think he might take a medical hardship scholarship due to his knee being such bad shape.

We are signing at least 3 DTs, because of the overall lack of depth at the position.

Sawyers - 1 tackle this year. Rumored to be considering transferring.

Saulsberry - 5 tackles this year. Hurt much of the time.

Mixon - 2 tackles this year.

We will upgrade the ability and depth of this position in a major way.

So we have 3 DTs committed, but Mixon will be a player and Sawyers is still with the team and it look like it'll stay that way.

I hope they all stick around. But considering Sawyers, Sauls, and Mixon are 3 of our returning 5 players, their 8 total tackles make them question marks. IMHO, we will rotate more bodies this year. That will be a good thing.

Not that I'm expecting him to be much of a contributor next year or anything, but Vickers played with the second team at DT in the 4th quarter last night.

Others have said this, but I think Mixon's best spot for the future might be SDE. He looked good there in the bowl game, and with the DTs we've got coming in along with the guys we have in right now, hopefully we won't need him at DT anymore.

Sawyers isn't leaving. Mixon played well yesterday and will move back to backup/rotational DE as he develops. He's more natural there. His size makes him a big DE. Playing in the trenches is the epitome of a developmental position.

I've probably been the main one spamming This opinion for a while. Barnett is our only true SDE now, but next year backing him up with Phillips and Mixon could be great depth there.

I'd like to keep him under 290 where he can play both. But if Alabama's performances these last few years against spread offenses (Ohio State this year, OU last year, and Texas A&M in 2012 & 2013) should've taught us anything, it's that we need versatility. We're all absolutely giddy over the additions of our hulking d-linemen (Mckenzie, Tuttle, etc). We can beat you in a phone booth with our huge d-linemen.

But if you want to go hurry up and try to spread us out then we can line up a bunch of speed on the field, down to defensive tackles who can run sideline to sideline, like Mixon and Picou. We need both if we want to win 2 playoff games and get us a national championship in this new format.

Lewis is a SDE and he's a solid, steady guy. He made himself a solid player. He's solid vs the run especially.

He's almost always entered the game opposite Barnett in place of Maggit/Vereen though. I think he has the frame to bulk up and be more of a SDE, but that's not the position he's been playing most of the season.

Technically that may not be what he's been playing but that's what he is naturally and that's how he plays. He's 6'4 260 ish. When he's in the game UT is basically playing with two SDEs.

I'm not sure I'd say that's his natural position either. Coming out of high school, most recruiting services had him listed as a WDE/OLB and he's had to work hard to bulk up to where he is. His natural game is more finesse/pass rushing. The coaching staff has done a good job developing his game thus far, but he's not a natural SDE.

I think he could be Jordan Williams-esque though in that he has the frame to bulk up and play a "heftier" position than his natural one.

That was high school. He plays the other side bc you can't take Derek off the field but he's not a WDE type player to me at all.
