'15 NC RB Bryce Love

You can have tremendous playmakers, but if can't get them the ball because the online was an open door, what do you do? Give honest viable answers, taking into consideration the state of the ol this year. Come on, coach, what's the game plan?

I will be happy to help with that. How many sacks and hurries did USCe and UK get without Thomas in the game? Notice how quick Dobbs got rid of the ball in those games and used the middle of the field? Crowder was out in the last two. They chose who they wanted to play on the O-line when they had other options. Who chose two true freshmen to start side by side half the season? That was a choice, not a have to. Kendrick and Wiesman were available to start at their natural positions - T and G. Kendrick got 3 starts, Wiesman got 2 subbing for Crowder. Why? Neither one was worse than who they sat behind. Kerby is a G - playing LT. Why? Kendrick is a LT. So Jake goes sideways on passes with slow developing run plays and everybody points to the O-line. Nope. Not it.

It may have been intentional they did it that way. I hope it was because the way they handled it reminded me of the Dools years. I want to believe they did it that way to prepare the young guys for future seasons. But maybe that's stretching it a bit. We will know for sure next season.

This has been the exact thing I have said about him since day 1. Always an excuse, need a better OL or whatever. Really not sure he is a very good OC, hope he proves me wrong .That job will sometimes require a little creativity to cover lack of talent, he absolutely proved he can't do that. only had to make 1 creative call against Florida and it would have changed our season BIG TIME.

Obviously I agree. I am not ready to throw him under the bus, but the guy needs to step it up and get with the way it is in the SEC. This is not the MAC or Big Least. The UF game was and still is gut wrenching to me because it was not only bad, but he proved he could repeat it again. UF, Mizzou and Vandy were the low points of the season for me with how the O was handled.

We were lacking the vertical passing game, which allowed teams to crowd the Los on defense to smother runs and take away shorter passes and screens. Now the question is why could we not threaten downfield? I know the oline didn't give us much time, most teams could pressure us with just the defensive fronts. Why are the wrs not able to get separation? Do we have just big wrs that can make the acrobatic catches, but not fly by secondary players one on one? I just don't recall a bunch of deep passes to guys that would have been gone had they gotten good throws. Most were step for step with the cb. I'm hoping it was just that most of our wrs were slowed by nagging injuries most of the year.

Dobbs is a wanton passer on deep balls. I think that is one his biggest weaknesses and puts a noticeable cap on what we can do schematically, especially down field passing. Next year we will have AK, which will add a very unique element to our offense- helping relieve some pressure off the QB (plus Hurd who he will relieve/split carries). And we will also gain Josh Smith back, who I think will be an invaluable component to our offensive production next year. He really stretches the field when he is out there and gives the QB a lot of open looks when he is on the field. Kid is really fast, smooth route runner, very productive and doesn't get enough props for his play.

I'm expecting to see wayyy less 3 yard outs next year. If we do see the same amount, then we've got a big coaching problem.

There were plenty of times that Dobbs was given time to throw and badly missed wide open receivers. It's not just one group or one players fault. The Oline as we all know was pretty bad, recivers dropped more passes than they should, WR blocking isn't very good, any pass over ten yards from Dobbs will be hit or miss. About half the time they are on point or atleast close enough that they should get caught, while the other half are nowhere close to the receiver or is hitting our opponents defensive players in the hands. Dobbs tends to throw better on the run but there also has been times he has hadplenty of time and either held it too long because he was locked in on a receiver or when he did throw it he missed wide open receivers badly. But he had quite a few drops as well with the biggest ones being in the Mizzou game. So there is definitely lots of blame spread out evenly over many different people from the Oline, QB, WR and Bajakian. Definitely not just the Oline.

I don't usually explain, but for you buddy I will this once...I was responding to your play on words (wander)...just got a mental image of you with a concussion from a "domestic accident"...wandering off incoherently. I'm a volume shooter and I hit my target audience...me. :wink2:

Definitely. Sometimes Butch coach's not to lose than to try and win. When he let Worley and Dobbs open things up our offense looked really good at times. The UF and Missou game were two very hyped games from a recruiting standpoint, to a lot of former players being back, doing checkerboard Neyland, had SEC Nation there for Mizzou and was the primetime ESPN came. Our offense looked very Vanilla against UF for some reason Instead of trying to expose UF's secondary they tried to run the ball and let the D win the game. When they did let Worley throw he made plays, but instead of sticking to what worked they tried to run the ball and that's hard for a veteran offense to do against Florida's D muchless a young one like ours. Not to mention UF and Mizzou, who don't exactly have good offense's converted a lot of third downs and killed ourselves with penalties. And Vandy was another trying not to lose game with needing a win to get bowl eligible, just like last season. It's like they don't handle pressure well or just hasn't figured out how to deal with it at times. Those three games this season were probably the most stressful for them and the importance of Vandy last yr and easily could have won all four. But mistakes we haven't been making and all of a sudden playing very vanilla happened in all 4 of them, not as much in the Mizzou game but even still Dobbs didn't get to try and open it up much either of the last two games. And the excuse about not having any playmakers is ridiculous. Our leading receiver in Howard played, Pearson played, J.Johnson played, Wolf and Ellis among others. No chance that is an excuse. That's why they rotate and recruit so many receivers.

I don't like Jake, but our blocking hindered his calling

I agree it hurt some. But we don't have to throw lateral 85% of the time. How about more quick slants? Quick Seam routes? 5-10 yard curls? Those don't take that long to develop.

Still quite a few Jake defenders out there. When I see a nickel D and the secondary is spread from the hashmarks to the sidelines approx 10-12 yards from the LOS, as it was much of the time against Mizzou and Vandy, I see an OC that needs to know what he is doing and not call 10 bubble screens and swing passes. I see an OC that needs to make sure his QB can check off to a quick slant or streak to the slot or TE on each and every play when he sees that D if he is not going to signal those plays in from the sidelines as he should. You don't even need dominant personnel to do those plays and they take 2 seconds.

Trying a slant route when the defense knows you cannot throw downfield is a lot harder than you think. Slants are great when you can stretch the field and the defensive backs play soft D in fear of the deep ball. But if they know you won't throw it deep, it will be obvious and be easily defended or even picked off.

You think I'm Nick Saban or something? If was concussed I would assuredly hit my noggin on something a few feet higher than the door knob. :)

I don't see where he was limited by personnel this season. He has a lot of weapons at his disposal.

I thought he probably could've done better but that offense still wasn't going to set the world on fire with that Oline. Even with "better" play calling we were severely limited in what we could do with the pieces we had. Part of that wasn't just the Oline as well, they limited Dobbs throws to what they trusted him to do; he rarely threw to open space in the middle of the field. I thought with Worley you might have had a better offense IF we could have protected him and with Dobbs he covered up "some" of the Oline deficiencies but wasn't nearly as accurate with the ball as Worley.

People are thinking we're loaded for next year and I just don't see the QB position as being good enough right now unless Josh Dobbs improves a lot.

A what, now?

Of course he could have misspelled "wonton" meaning Dobbs is a thrower of the chinese dumplings and has balls of steel.

My thing with Jake is that he doesn't make adjustments mid-game. If he sees that something isn't working, he should go in at half-time and talk to the offense and try to get some new things working. Instead, he beats the RB Dive play into the ground. Then between games, he makes adjustments. For example, almost abandoning the "triple-option" plays with VP coming in motion even though those plays helped us put up around 400 yards against South Carolina.

Good play-callers know how and when to make adjustments. Jake does not do that.

I also think it's hard to make adjustments when you have one hand tied behind your back as a coach. I think it may be a little unfair to judge him given what he has to work with. When we had a decent running QB that fit his system and a healthy Jalen Hurd no one was complaining much about him.
