'15 TN ATH Jauan Jennings (UT commit 4/7/14)

Would it have made that big of a difference?

Possibly it does make a difference, and I believe winning the game is most important. However we do not need to be wasteful with a whole year of Dobbs football life. Like what happened with Worley. We lost a whole year next year when Worley could have really helped, and for what? Since Worley came back in the game the right decision was obviously made. But let's be honest. Any serious injury and Dobbs has to be the man. Forget the redshirt at that point.

*This is by no means a knock on JJ*

My take on these two.

JJ is a bit of a wildcard. I think CBJ expects JJ to develop into a great SEC caliber QB... But with a kid that is an ATH trying to become a SEC QB, it can be hit or miss.

This is where QD comes into play. I think he is the safety net at QB for the class. I think the staff knows he has a shorter path to becoming a SEC caliber QB. I think they feel very confident that he can develop to lead our team back to winning seasons.

Back to JJ. If JJ can develop into what some people here think he can, we will have a real stud on our hands. I just think at this point it is still a giant unknown if he will develop his passing to be serviceable in the SEC.

Keep in mind, our offense and weapons at WR are not set up to have a Nick Marshall type at QB. We need an elite passer who can also tuck the ball an run when needed.
So Worley is an elite passer now? This system doesnt call for elite to be successful. It calls for an intelligent quarterback who doesnt make mistakes and can put the ball into the playmakers hands. JJ is being recruited by this coaching staff as well as Dormandy. So who knows more about the skill set of these recruits. You or coaches that see beyond your stats in the paper.

I wonderif the Staff always thought of him as a QB or if this is a surprise to them. If it's a suprise and they are not interested in him as a QB does he look elsewhere?

Are you serious? He has been recruited as a QB pretty much from the beginning. They were taking 2 QB's with this class, and when QD committed, they pretty much shut it down.

NOT an Early Enrollee.

Butch offered him as a QB because (as usual) he sees talent before the rest of us...Jennings best shot at excelling at his preferred position, is to go with that type of coach. I'm a Dormady guy but I have to say this kid is bringing it...we might have him in the conversation when we're discussing VFL QBs on a Nationdom thread someday. :)

I have to agree. Everyone forgets the kid was a true freshmen last year and performed fairly well in the SEC. Anyone remember the orange white game?

My feeling is he is a gamer...performs best with the lights on. Vandy game is not a good indication...who did we have at receiver, tight end? Replay that with this years receiving core, te, and backs.

I'm not saying he will be better than Dormady, Jennings, etc. but he has potential.

I agree. Very little chance IMO that JJ plays as a TFR. Love his upside, but he will need some time. If the RS of Dobbs plays out throughout the year, IMO he is our likely starter in 2015. Good move by the staff to save a year for the kid rather than burn a year in mop up duty.

I am interested to see what the staff decides to do with JJ as true freshman assuming He doesn't win job over a Dobbs. Do you redshirt and just work on his mechanics and fundamentals for a year and save a year in future or do you find ways to get him the ball such as wildcat package. He is such a dynamic athlete that you hate to not find a way to get him on field as a freshman. If I were coach I would be very tempted to let him run a few plays a game in wildcat with Hurd/Scott/Kamara

I am no coach but I'd RS him all day

My hope for JJ is that he comes in and starts right away. This kid has all the intangibles. Pure athlete, winner, and ultimate competitor. What we have been missing at quarterback for a while now (although, Worley has drastically changed my opinion this year).

I would be just as excited as anybody to watch him do that. However, next year is SO important for the program to take a step forward. It is hard for anybody to take a step forward playing a True Freshman at QB in the SEC. Georgia did it several years back (hobnail boot anybody?), but very rare! Unless he comes in and is light years ahead of the others, I don't see it happening.

Not only was he a freshman, he was kinda hurt most the time he played. I just really think the coaches wanna RS him, if something significant were to happen to Worley we would see Dobbs the rest of the year.

Dobbs has an 80% chance of being your opening day starter next season, IMO.

15% Peterman

5% Dormady or Jennings come in and blow the socks off of everybody, but true freshmen very rarely have the ability to start day 1 at QB

Sounds about right to me.

I didn't mean for it to be critical, I get why you can't talk specifics, but because of that, it's probably best to not even mention it.

I know it is offtopic but is that Raynoch Thompson in your avi? On mobile and can't make the pic out. Loved that guy when he played for the Big Orange.
