'16 NC QB Austin Kendall (former UT commit)

Sadly he has it set up here. dobbs is here two more years. he redshirts and beats out the other three and is a four year starter. Dormady is the only one of the three with a remote chance to beat him out. and thats slim. makes no sense.

I think you are underestimating Jones.

Not being an EE makes it unlikely he beats out Dormady as backup next year but I believe he'll be something special by the time Dobbs vacates the position.

Um, Jones was the QB the coaches wanted the most...

You'd like to think that the highest rated player would be the best first choice, but after seeing how explosive the offense can be with a mobile QB...and remembering how frightening Auburn's O was with a weak-armed but highly mobile QB and a quality RB...It's clear that good wheels can greatly mitagate a bad arm. I would love to hear the staff's choice between a QB who's arm is a 10 and legs are a 7 vs a QB who's arm is a 7 and legs are a 10. I'm thinking the latter is more effective for the system.

And no...that wasn't intended to be an AK vs JG discussion...just curious what the staff's strength preferences are.

As Debord said earlier the offense relies on a QB who is a passer and want less runs from their QB. So they would take a guy who is a 10 passer with some mobility over aan average passer who is a great runner. QB's passing will win us games not a guy who is a better runner. Auburns offense will adjust based off who plays QB. This yr they will look nothing like when Marshall was there. J. Johnson is a pass first and most QB. Malzahn knew he had to develop Marshall as a passer to continue being effective. Marshall's first yr isn't a typical Malzahn offense and he wouldn't continue winning by not throwing the ball. Defense's started figuring his offense and wouldn't be able to continue winning by having more QB runs than passes.

Not sure that is completely true. Early in the summer Jones was in the Coach's top 5 board or so said Hubbs. Those boards change monthly as they see other guys throw and watch their development. If it came down to Dormady or Jones would they have taken Jones over Dormady? Maybe..Maybe not..early in the summer most definitely.. But after both of ttheirSR yes who knows. Based off Debords comments in the Dobbs article I would lead towards Dormady because he is the better pure passer. But Jones is a pass first QB who has said he much prefers passing and not much running. I know more about Dormady just because he was committed longer and kept up with his season. Jones wasn't in a pass heavy offense like Dormady so it's hard to judge based off stats. But with our Coach's and Gruden being very high on him and Saban and Kiffin offering him immediately after throwing for them that he will be a good college QB. Then heard Jones normally would have been ranked higher in most yrs but California had some many elite HS QB's he was probably underrated. Glad we have them both and look forward to seeing how they progress and who backs up Josh.

Not sure anyone honestly knows that. Highly rated QB's fail and get buried on depth charts every yr. Kendall could be a Heisman type player or could never start a college game. Look at LSU they have had 4*-5* QB's but none have developed into much and same with USC and many others. As an evaluator said QB is the hardest position to evaluate and are more misses there than any other position.

My only concern is that at 6'2, with that almost side arm release from his hips, won't that be more difficult than someone a little taller with a more regular motion throwing over the height of a Sec D-line?

He does throw a pretty ball though. Any of you arm chair qb scouts know if/how easy of problem that is to fix? Just seems like his motion would result in a lot of batted balls.

Changing someone's mechanics is difficult to do and doesn't end well most of the time. It's best to let someone do what they are most comfortable with.

Did this kid ever really recruit for us much? It doesn't seem like he ever did a lot of it even when he was solid which is odd for being the QB.

I'd imagine he's even shorter than 6'2 too. Probably more in the 6'0-6'1 range. Kid reminds me a lot of Connor Shaw (though maybe not quite as fast).

Butch and staff's QB recruiting be like:
