'16 NJ DT Rashan Gary

True, but Gary >> all of them. He's a McKenzie-level DT. If he's interested, you go hard after him no matter who else is on your board. I'm hoping a visit to UT happens like he's stated it will so we can have some sort of chance with him. Just not looking realistic right now.

If LSU gets Gary, maybe we can get one of those in Louisiana if we miss on Brown. We def need one more DT stud this year.

Gary is visiting LSU for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. I think that's his clear leader right now, without question. The Mad Hatter may have this one locked up.

Our #1 DT target is D Brown. That's been our staff's focal point. I don't think they'll consider Gary as a realistic target until he visits, which is supposed to happen in the next month or so. But the fact that he's been to LSU multiple times already tells me what I need to know.
Better than Bama or the Dawgs.

I think our DT pecking order is this (assuming Gary is a non-factor):

Derrick Brown
Antwuan Jackson
Emmitt Gooden (will grow into a DT)
Rashard Lawrence
Ben Frazier

Boss Tagaloa is there somewhere too, but IMO he will stay out west. Obviously with some decommitments/coaching changes after the season, the board can change dramatically. We may not see another DT commitment until then.

:good!:

Dont totally count out lawrence. We are recruiting him hard and theres a chance we get him on campus.

That recruitment is kind of weird because it seemed he was high on UT at one time. I feel like we have a shot at anyone if we can get them on campus.

I'm assuming you mean Dexter. I think we have about as good of a shot with him as we do Gary, which is very little. He's really been talking about Bama, FSU, Clemson and NC State. IMO that's his top 4 with everyone else swinging for the fence to get him on a visit this fall.

True, but he's "seemed high" on all the schools I mentioned. And those are the ones he's still talking up. Not that we have no chance, I'm just saying he's not someone I expect will be a Vol based on who I've heard our primary focus has been on this summer.

Any of the discussed DTs would be nice gets to go along with Alexis Johnson. He's going to be a player and seems solidly committed even after his visit to Baylor.

Dexter is giving everyone a shot. Gators much more a threat than Noles, tar holes more the the wuffies. We are recruiting him hard and if he comes back over we have a shot. He is intent on finding the right fit.

It would be really bizarre for him to end up at LSU after his mom's comments about the 3-4 the other day. They run a 4-3 now, but I've read multiple articles about Kevin Steele transitioning them over to the 3-4 in the next few years.

IF Gary visits, which I am extremely doubtful of. Hopefully the coaches are putting the full court press on Brown and stop focusing on Gary.

I know it's pretty much impossible but could you imagine McKenzie, Tuttle, Phillips, Barnett, Taylor, Butcher and Gary?

I'll never understand you pessimists. He's already said he's gonna try and visit. If he doesn't come, he doesn't. But there is no need to act like we're some third rate program with no shot.

Apparently you get your info from different places than I do. I am pretty confident in stating that those are his top 4. He's still not trimmed his list, so yes everyone still has a chance to change things. But I don't think Florida or UNC have very good odds here.

If he visits then my pessimism will turn to optimism. However I am not one who thinks just because we are UT and just because Jones has done such an excellent job at recruiting that anyone we get on campus we have a shot at. Sorry hut it doesn't work that way. There are plenty of guys Jones has gotten on campus that we have no shot with. All I am saying is just about everything we have heard about Gary says he has very little interest in us. I would be ecstatic if that changes. If he doesn't visit then it will mean my gut feeling was right and if he does then I will be wrong.

Hes been to unc three times recently. Clemson and UF are the main teams to watch out of state right now and bama if they can get him back down.

Wild considering how many good DTs they have in Louisiana this year.

Ed Alexander and Glen Logan are already committed. Rashard Lawrence is probably headed to Bama and I'm not sure what's up with Stephon Taylor. Probably Texas or Auburn. LSU is also pushing for Blacklock from Texas.

Speculation and highly unlikely. What is likely is that we're starting to recruit bigger/stronger linebackers than the type Chavis preferred, who were mostly safety hybrids weighing in around 215. Our LB unit has usually been a weak link in our D unless we had a monster at Mike like Sheppard, Minter, or Beckwith. You might see some more multiple fronts in the future, like 4-3 under against power running teams like Bama and Arkansas, but Louisiana has always been a 4-3 state, and LSU will always run a 4-3 as their base D.

I guarantee UNC has 0% shot at landing him. Follow up with me later on that.

Florida was the story back in May/June. He's been listening to Clemson, FSU and NC State more recently. But if I had to pick a winner today, it's Bama.

Has nothing to do with being pessimistic or UT's status as a program. It's still early and anything can happen, but it's sometimes easy to see which schools have better chances with a recruit based on visits, interviews, etc. He hasn't been able to make it to Knoxville, but will be going to Baton Rouge for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. He's been to Athens. We are closer to him than both. Sometimes recruits just like other places/teams/depth charts better. It happens.

I bet if you went out on a date with a girl and she threw a drink in your face and stormed out, you'd think "I got her right where I want her." Your Koolaid may just be too strong my man.

Wish hed give us more of a look. Hate to see him wasted at ncsu especially when their noncomference schedule is nothing short of embarrassing.

Agreed. Only thing I keep thinking is that maybe he wants to stay in-state but with UNC possibly looking at getting hammered by the NCAA, it won't be UNC. I've been told that specifically.

NC State's staff has been surprisingly decent at recruiting thus far. They pulled D Roseboro last year. I think Saban will full court press him though.
