'16 TN LB Tim Hart (FORMER UT commit 6/26/15)

I believe Bruins take is just don't take a commitment from the number 9 WR on your board in June if the plan is to take 3 WRs and the other 8 are uncommitted or still considering options. I think it makes perfect sense.

Sure, if you think a program with records of 5-7, 7-6, 6-7, 5-7, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6 in its past 7 seasons could handle floundering around about 40th in recruiting for most of the year.

I think we would have been just fine without taking the 3 kids we cut loose this year. Not a question in my mind

Fair enough. I want Butch to sign the best class possible. I wish recruiting had not turned into this but it has and I don't think we can get the toothpaste back in the tube.

If we had an open ended signing period or a second signing period there might be less of this junk but we don't. And I'm not sure a second signing period would help. The complaint then would be that kids are locked in too early and too much can change.

I'd say a recruit who signed in the early period would be able to get released if there was a HC change before the regular NSD. Not a OC, DC, or position coach. Just a head coaching change.

Slippery slope. That's where it would start and then it would be position coaches. Then it would be because of a death in the family or an illness in the family. Then it would just be a free for all.

Not if there is a set rule. The signature is binding unless there is a HC change. The only way it's a slippery slope is if you leave it open ended and make the rules up on the fly.

That's been Butch's MO for recruiting, and it has landed two top 5 classes. Complain all you want, but it has landed results.

A coach only has so many years to prove he can win. If he doesn't win, he's fired. Butch is going to do what he needs to do to win. Not only does butch want to win, the fans want him to win.

If a player is told to look around, I'm sure it's to get a better player. And, if a player is asked to blue shirt, he is just being asked to either wait on a scholly or make a hard decision. Tennessee is not in a position to turn away better players.

I'll be around providing my thoughts.

Tell me on February 3 if recruiting has struggled.

Even in the best care scenario our recruiting will be viewed as a step backward

There are a number of different reasons. IMO the biggest reason is we are no longer able to convince kids they are going to play immediately but I also think the loss of the family "feel" of tennessee recruiting is also a smaller part of it. This thread is an example of that

I think there will be enough booms around NSD to keep us content. The class ranking will obviously be lower than it has been. While taking 20-22 will give most a reason to discount the ranking, those who know recruiting knows UT is taking a step back. Butch and the staff will need to rethink some things going forward.

As compared to what? The last two years? We obviously can't take the same numbers as the last two years, so of course this class won't be as highly ranked. We don't have immediate playing time to promise to a stud RB, so it's understandable why we're not getting one this year.(Not that the one we're signing is bad.) The one area I see as a true step back is WR. That will need to be addressed, but we're still in it for highly rated players at other positions of need. Best case scenario, our only recruiting step back is WR, and Butch fixes that this year. NSD will tell us a lot of what we want to know.

Which recruiting site do you work for again?

Good post

Yes our recruiting before set a hell of a standard and for that reason I have very little to no worry about where we are now

That correlation has not been established. The top 5 classes are a result of countless factors, one of which may be early commitments from marginal prospects

I do not remember those officials either, but I find it hard to believe that we will take 3 blue shirts this year. Obviously, this would help us for this years class with only 3/4 spots left depending on the status of Hart. But, that will be 3 spots lost on next years class. Based on everything I have read, 2017 is a huge year in state and around the Southeast, for highly rated prospects that we are in good standing with. Blue shirts are like borrowing money on your house from a title company. If you keep doing it, it will catch up with you.

Is it southeast or west?

I disagree with most of this but not going to belabor the point. You are not going to always have top 5 classes at UT.

It's pretty clear what Butch's strategy has been, and I have stated this well before now. He takes guys early who he is comfortable with taking but who may be further up the board. If a higher ranked prospect wants in, then he takes them and asks the other to look around. This has been a pattern, and it resulted in two top 5 classes. Pretty simple.

This is what high level recruiting has turned into. It's not always pretty but it gets results. The best teams do it and Butch understands that to get where we want to be, we have to do it too.

Also, this class will likely close strong and will only end up being a step back because the numbers are so much lower. It will still have good, highly ranked players at most positions.
