'16 TN OL Bryce Mathews (Ole Miss commit)

This thread just mind effed me. Why was there all the talk (not just on here, but I've seen it multiple places) and he isn't even related.

Well can I recant some of the things I said?

I thought it was mentioned early that they weren't related, but then I got confused after the recent conversation. It will still be tough because as a native Texan, those roots can be important. On the flip side, his family will be two and a half hours away, and Jason helped train at DI Academy with Peyton's influence. So, the family has been around alot of UT people.

Even if they're not related your point about how difficult it might be to pull Bryce is still valid. I'm sure that I read a quote from Jason while looking the relationship stuff up this morning where he took credit for Bruce's soon choosing A&M. I hope I'm not getting that wrong but don't really want to try to go back and find it.

I'm still holding out hope though! Go Vols!

Yeah it will be difficult but not impossible as I once thought.

Your points still ring true about the pull of A&M for him and his parents... Just like our legacies... Like I said, I wouldnt be surprised either way, but I would have to give the edge to A&M, but living a large part of your life here, good friend committing to UT,etc. puts us firmly in position to give A&M a run for him...

I think a lot of the confusion with the family is both named Mathews, both played for the Titans,Bruce lives in Houston, his son played for A&M,and there have been a ton of Mathews in the NFL... And now Jason's son comes around the same time after Jake just left so its understandable

Just a quick update. I spoke to 3 different people last night at the BA v. Ravenwood scrimmage who are very close to the Mathews. They all individually had the same take on the situation. I understand that this was second hand info to me so as always TIFWIW:

1. Bryce is truly wide open at this point and no one thinks he will be pulling the trigger soon
2. He is closest to Herb Hand at Vandy and really likes him, however he doesn't like anything else about Vandy. The campus, facilities, stadium and Coach Mason all leave him unimpressed so unless something changes they appear to be a long shot at this point
3. Tennessee, Ole Miss and Alabama all have his attention and they would be his top 3 at this point
4. They very much appreciate the A&M offer but he is not a lock...dad is not pushing him to A&M at all and in fact they would be 4th in order at this point
5. A little disappointing to me was that one of the friends I spoke with felt like Tennessee isn't pushing as hard as Ole Miss who seems to recruiting him the hardest...I would think he would be a huge priority for us at the OT position but that's why I get paid the big bucks to post on free message boards

As a side note...BA looked VERY sloppy during the scrimmage. It was only a half and I counted 22 penalties at one point at least 6 of which nullified first downs. Both Bryce and Ryan looked great on the o-line and BA just had too much talent for Ravenwood. Van Jefferson stands out...he appears to glide so effortlessly. The BA CBs did a pretty good job on him...I was doing a lot of talking but I think he had one really sweet leaping one handed catch for a short gain and then did have one 45-50 yard catch on a jump ball/terrible pass. He did not score but was a very effective decoy on Ravenwood's lone score last night.

FTR, Herb Hand is to James Franklin what Steve Stripling is to Butch Jones. That's his right-hand man. Not saying anything about your info, which I certainly appreciate and have no reason to doubt, but not sure how anyone couldn't know at this point that Hand's been gone from Nashville for a while now.

Can't argue the point at all. I had no idea where he was and probably couldn't name one Penn State or Vandy assistant right now if I had to.

Oh yeah, same boat here. I only remember his name because a Vol fan on twitter told him to off himself or something equally offensive last year and he made a big stink about it.

Appreciate the information, but how many of our legacies from last year's class said very similar things? Dillon Bates said publicly numerous times that he was wide open, and his dad was not pushing him towards any school. In addition, he visited many top schools, including Bama, etc.

This one may make the board lively 2 weeks before the season- are you related to Al Matthews?

Yeah, I agree. I know that you guys that have followed recruiting forever, understand how it works, have seen these scenarios play out and know "recruit speak" when you see it can pretty accurately predict these things. I'm not in any way an expert just reporting what Bryce's dad told me and now others that are close to the family.
