I think he is a better athlete than Bates. The question will be, can he be physical enough to be an effective SEC linebacker. He is not real tough now and needs to learn to knock the stuffing out of runners and wide receivers. His attitude needs to get a bit meaner.

I think some have forgotten just how athletic Bates is/was, which is one of the main reasons UT fans were so excited about him.

This. Something has to be done. It's funny. What none of us was worried about(defense), was our biggest weakness. And what some were worried about(offense/wr play and Dobbs passing) became our strength. Why can't we ever be a complete team ALL SEASON?

He tends to miss the most critical time for development due to injuries. I don't know that he has had a full offseason of working out here

I think it more about talent than development. We had some really productive LBs,including Maybin, Kirkland, and Sapp. Injuries at LB have destroyed the position. It would be interesting to see what Bates can do if he is healthy. Depth has been a problem and Spring drills will be a test for the new guys at the position. I agree that development at the DB positions has been a problem..We seem to have a lot of talent but it has not shown up on the field. As of now both positions are in need of improvement in 2017.

Don't recall which game, but Bates played some snaps at LB. I agree with the post above about LB's. We had 4 LB's injured at one point. Try taking the top 4 LB's away from any team and see how it goes.

He played against Florida for sure. I think some against GA as well. Really thinking we need a new LB coach as well as DB

In hindsight I kind of feel like the UF game was the coaches seeing if maybe he was just more of a gamer.


Some have said that he hasn't had as much of a grasp on the scheme as the coaches would like, but we've heard that about other LBs from the 2014 class as well.


At signing day 2014, it looked like we were loaded at LB for the foreseeable future. Hard to tell if it's been lack of development or just missed evaluations on some of those guys.
