'17 GA LB Solon Page III (UT signee)

Al and Raynoch would still eat in this day and age. Both athletic and fast.

Chief Chavis had a jump on the game.
In 2011 when he was coaching LSU and they played Oregon who had speed everywhere on offense, he dominated them. Because he had been coaching to negate or match speed for years.

Now everybody has Chavis type personel.

WRs and DTQB playing CB
CBs playing S
S and RB playing LB
LB playing DE

But its evolved from that even. The game keeps EVOLVING. But I would give Chief credit for what you see today on defense all throughout college football.

No one complained about Sapp because he was a 4* recruit.

Sapp was way better on film IMO. He made way more plays and also played in the box a lot and showed a real physical presence. They are very different looking prospects if you actually watch their film.

He was also a 5* with offers from every major program in the country. Comparing one guy to another just because they were similar size is laughable.

Had they started the star rankings yet? He was a class behind Peyton iirc.

The National Recruiting Advisor which became Rivals around 2000 was around back then. The stars started then, but their numbers ratings were the same that they are today. Al Wilson was a 6.1 overall and the #1 Strong Safety prospect in the country and #23 overall nationally. He chose Tennessee over Notre Dame.

Wow. Are there still links to those rankings? I'd love to go back and look through them.

It was never online. Everything back then was subscription only. Believe it or not, I still have all the old NRA newsletters and magazines. Lemming was the one who got all the publicity back then but the NRA was so much better at evaluating and breaking down guys and I believe they were the ones who had all the connections to the college coaches. Bobby Burton and Jeremy Crabtree ran it and they were way ahead of the times.

Gonna need you to go ahead and scan all those newsletters, then post the digital copies here. Thanks!

When I first joined VQ in college (circa 2000), Hubbs was not with Rivals then. If I remember, he was with Alliance? He moved to the Rivals network a year or two later.

That's probably correct. I forgot all about Alliance Sports. They were only around for a couple of years. I think Bill King was big with them too.

I've saved the newspaper articles from the day after signing day from the early 90's till everything got on-line around 2000. This was from the Chattanooga TFP Thursday, February 2, 1995;

"AL WILSON (6-2, 212) Jackson Defensive Back
His 4.32 40 speed has the Central-Merry running back/defender among nation's top players, specifically top five by Nationl BlueChips ... Considered himself more of a blocking back than runner but ran for 1.160 yards and 15 touchdons on 97 carries ... Also played some noseguard on occasion ... Had 163 tackles in senior season plus three fumbles caused and one fumble recovery ... Is state's defending shot put champion ... Picked Vols over Notre Dame, Illinois ... Academically qualified."

Like Buchna, I don't recall the star ratings until the internet became popular. Before then a few services would put out top 100 list in the south and nation wide. Could have been more out there but things weren't so accessible as they are today.

I was a preseason magazine devotee. The top 100 by Emfinger was big and the elite recruits were coded by colors...blue being the top.

Wilson played RB, Safety, and Noseguard on occasion. Could have lined up anywhere on the field. Don't see that much anymore. You will see some offense/defense, but most guys are specializing at one position on one side of the ball.

I actually saw Wilson play in high school against mine, but I do not specifically recall how well he played.

Wasn't there also recruiting a magazine put out by Jeff Whittaker? And the always fair and unbiased Forrest Davis.

I stuck to Athlon's,Lindy's and Sporting News on most years...beginning in 86.

Wilson was ridiculous. Him and his backfield mate at JCM were basically unstoppable.

Back in the day you had to check the list that was taped on the stadium wall to see if you made the team.

Anyone remember Dante Hickey from Cleveland back around that time? That guy was an absolute freak. One of the best prospects of that era. Him and Al Wilson together would have been insane. A shame he never made it.

Guys like Dustin Moore and Travis Cozart also come to mind.
