Al and Raynoch would still eat in this day and age. Both athletic and fast.
Had they started the star rankings yet? He was a class behind Peyton iirc. And he was a high school RB and a DB on defense. Thinking he would've been a 3 star by today's system...4 star at best.
The National Recruiting Advisor which became Rivals around 2000 was around back then. The stars started then, but their numbers ratings were the same that they are today. Al Wilson was a 6.1 overall and the #1 Strong Safety prospect in the country and #23 overall nationally. He chose Tennessee over Notre Dame.
Wow. Are there still links to those rankings? I'd love to go back and look through them.
It was never online. Everything back then was subscription only. Believe it or not, I still have all the old NRA newsletters and magazines. Lemming was the one who got all the publicity back then but the NRA was so much better at evaluating and breaking down guys and I believe they were the ones who had all the connections to the college coaches. Bobby Burton and Jeremy Crabtree ran it and they were way ahead of the times.
When I first joined VQ in college (circa 2000), Hubbs was not with Rivals then. If I remember, he was with Alliance? He moved to the Rivals network a year or two later.
I've saved the newspaper articles from the day after signing day from the early 90's till everything got on-line around 2000. This was from the Chattanooga TFP Thursday, February 2, 1995;
"AL WILSON (6-2, 212) Jackson Defensive Back
His 4.32 40 speed has the Central-Merry running back/defender among nation's top players, specifically top five by Nationl BlueChips ... Considered himself more of a blocking back than runner but ran for 1.160 yards and 15 touchdons on 97 carries ... Also played some noseguard on occasion ... Had 163 tackles in senior season plus three fumbles caused and one fumble recovery ... Is state's defending shot put champion ... Picked Vols over Notre Dame, Illinois ... Academically qualified."
Like Buchna, I don't recall the star ratings until the internet became popular. Before then a few services would put out top 100 list in the south and nation wide. Could have been more out there but things weren't so accessible as they are today.

Wilson played RB, Safety, and Noseguard on occasion. Could have lined up anywhere on the field. Don't see that much anymore. You will see some offense/defense, but most guys are specializing at one position on one side of the ball.
I actually saw Wilson play in high school against mine, but I do not specifically recall how well he played.
