'17 TN ATH Amari Rodgers (Clemson commit)

They were fine in pass protection, too.

Time to stop finding a scapegoat for a consistent problem.

I'm not looking for a scapegoat. At times pass pro was awful when we needed it most. Dobbs needs to get better at evading the rush while still looking to pass.

OL was not a problem at all this past season.

That unit is a year ahead of schedule IMO.

I thought it would go from abysmal in 2014, to "bad" in 2015, decent in 2016, and good in 2017. They skipped bad and went straight to decent. Should be very good next season if we have an answer at LT.

OL improved a lot run blocking, but I really think our scheme helped them a lot in that department too. Debora's ground game was much less predictable than Bajakian's.

I can't wait to see how much they've improved in 2016.

I think when there are multiple guys not producing and elevating their talents there's a common denominator.
Every other position group has improved every year. One hasn't...
You've got to take a look at why that group isn't progressing.
I don't k ow where the disconnect is, but from head coach, to OC, to WR coach; there has to be some adjustments. It's been 3 years of below average production.

I think the WR coach needs a new face. Similar to Trooper coaching Meachem and Swain into a killer tandem. CZA may not be a bad coach but they aren't responding to him at all. Malone's talent is maddening. Dude can look elite on one play and a bust the next. Like the out and up versus South Carolina. Dude dropped a wide open TD and just jogged off like it didn't bother him one bit. Butch should bench him for non aggressive play. When players don't get on the field they respond in a hurry.

You were watching a totally different line then.. Their pass protection stats looked better because we pretty much gave up on even trying to throw down the field much. He still rarely had a lot of time to get rid of the ball. Not saying they were not a huge improvement over the past 2 years, but they were at best average in pass protection. Run blocking has always been a strong suit for those guys. Which should be expected when you are basically starting 5 guards. Not a single person started a game for UT last year that would project as a tackle in the NFL or another SEC team not named Vandy for that matter. There is a reason we stocked up on Tackles this recruiting cycle.

From what I gather, Z struggles in the personal department with the WRs. He hammers home the negative while rarely shouting out the positive. His group plays uptight and afraid to make mistakes. They play kind of robotic instead of loose. That's why I think change would be good. It's hard to regain that confidence once you lost it

Vols really struggled to protect when they HAD to throw vs good teams. Ark, Florida and definitely Alabama pinned their ears back and got after dobbs hard without having to blitz much. One reason for the high number of inaccurate throws and completions short of the marker...that part has to change.

3 pages of nothing about a kid who isn't going to UT.

Spring practice needs to hurry up and get here.

Not everyone is as pessimistic as yourself and if you don't like the thread and what's posted in it then don't read it or reply to it.

In head1's defense, there is a football forum to discuss the OL's progress in 2015. Most expect to be able to read about Rodger's recruiting in a thread bearing his name? He is a WR, not an OL. :hi:

To be fair though, the 2014 line could barely protect the QB for screens and quick passes, so what we saw was improvement.

Clemson SC is in the middle of nowhere. That is a very ugly state away from the coast.

Clemson is in the middle of nowhere but campus and the surrounding area is gorgeous. You're less than 30 min from Greenville, so there's things to do in a bigger city, if need be. All depends on what you want in a school and town. I almost left UT after 1st semester because campus and Knoxville were overwhelming for a kid from a town of 4500 and 14 hrs away. I immensely enjoyed my short time in grad school at Clemson; it was more up my alley.

Out of curiosity...how/why did you end up going to UT from Florida to start with?

Surrounding area is nice but I never liked the campus. I thought it was very bland architecturally and didn't like the few blocks that made up the town. Then again I consider myself more of a city person so it makes sense why I didn't like it.
