'17 TN ATH Jacoby Stevens (LSU commit)

The kid will not see the field as a DB at LSU. He lacks SEC speed on the backend. His best hope to see the field is to bulk up and be a weakside LB like JRM.

No wonder we were recruiting him at that position. Our staff is a lot smarter than these recruiting services.

This kid will not make it as a safety. Too Slow.

Is LSU recruiting him as a DB? Because if they are, your position on Stevens looks even dumber.

He's potentially a linebacker. And he's still good.

Both those things can be true.

We'll see if he can transition to LB. He will definitely be undersized there.

Either way I don't think this kid is worthy of the 5 star label. Just another one of those mistakes made by the recruiting services.

Doesn't have to run full speed when his half speed is still twice as fast as everyone else. He had to slow down to catch that deep ball and was still 15 steps ahead of everyone. I will concede that it's harder for Payton to show his skill when his team is crap, and at this point Hillsboro's defense has collapsed. But JaCoby has been all over the field on defense especially. Definetely identifiable physically too.

Edit: by "everyone" I mean the 3 defenders trying to cover him

"having a bad game"

Sounds like sour grapes

I've actually been consistent about my assesment of this kid. All the way back to when he was still flirting with us.

I've also been critical of guys committed to us that I thought were overrated. I've also maintained my sky high respect for Tee Higgins even though he spunned us.

I don't let whether a kid is committed to us or not affect my evaluation of his skill level.

I know, and I respect that.

But I can't see how someone could watch the game tonight and say he had a bad game.

He didn't have a bad game. I never said that. In fact I would say he was the most DOMINANT player out there. But that doesn't matter. This is high school. 99% of the kids on that field will never play past that point. Dominating a high school game is meaningless.

What I try to look for when watching a kid play high school competition is TRANSFERABLE SKILLS. Is what he's doing out there going to translate to the next level? I personally just don't see it with Jacoby. He lacks the EXPLOSIVENESS to be elite at the SEC level. IMO he looks like a SLOW plodding athlete. Not suited for a position like DB or WR. Compared to average high school kids, it doesn't matter. Against SEC level competition, he'll get exposed.

Javonta Payton, however, did show a transferable skill. His ELITE EXPLOSIVENESS. The kid has incredible speed, acceleration, and agility. Along with a nice frame that you could develop. Unlike Jacoby who looks fully developed and is probably closer to his ceiling, Payton has a ways to go to fill his frame out which leads me to believe he has an even higher ceiling.

IMO Javonta Payton has the potential to be a slightly shorter Justin Hunter.

Even LSU make dumb blunders in recruiting.

All I know is the kid looks SLOW.

Javonta Payton is the only elite athlete I see out there tonight.

Of course they do but when it comes to DBs, Miles knows talent when he sees it. If he has been recruited to play DB at LSU then thats all you need to know

All I know is Les Miles has forgotten more football in one year than you could ever know in 10 lifetimes.

That's what they, Georgia and Bama are telling him. He will play LB.

Are we gonna apply the same logic to Jacoby's performance that we did to Maleik's? I thought he looked pretty damn slow too. He didn't dominate like I thought he would considering his ranking and the fact he was almost the biggest guy on the field. He looks like a LB for sure. That Oliver kid was everywhere.

So which is it? You say you will never trust our coaches to put the best players on the field (I get it a la Kirkland vs. Jumper) yet praise their smarts as being vastly superior to the recruiting services...

Kid is very talented. LSU is getting a good one.

Leb, not so sure about the LSU part. Les is on the hot seat, if he beats Bama and does not crap the bed against Ole Mi$$ and arKANSAS, then there is a good chance he ends up a Tiger. If Les does lose to Satan or the team eff's up then Les is gone and just like we got Kirkland from Michigan we might still get Stevens if Shoop wants him.

This is high school. I would hope he can run away from 5'10" 150 lbs kids with 5.5 speed.

He just doesn't look explosive. Especially when compared to a guy like Javonta Payton.

You once declared Guarantano had elite speed, faster than Dobbs when you saw him outrun a bunch of high school kids on film....... why doesn't the same apply to Stevens?

Even if he decommits from LSU, can't see him coming here....would still choose from the other 3-4 teams he had ahead of us IMO.
