'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

He was definitely impressed and said that he is listening. I'll be honest this kid has blown my mind over a 2 yr period. He is legit and has improved leaps and bounds. The biggest improvement is his lateral movement and quickness. Jacob is a tackling machine and its not after the LOS but he has a lot of TFLs too this yr.

OU and Bama he loves both and they both recruit him like crazy

Tennessee still has Blakely. He's a good fit. Phillips can play in any scheme imo.

I think Bama is where Phillips will head. He's absolutely molded for what they do.

I think Thigpen would turn him to into a faster AJ Johnson if he did come here. But we should be okay for another 2017. I think we drop Burnam and get a more highly rated guy come signing day like with Kirkland and Cecil?. But it won't be Phillips.

We need more DTs than anything else. We need 2 more in this class.

I know it's not likely, but hopefully we can get him to hold off a while on making a decision. I'll be interested to see how OU's season plays out. These next two weeks are critical for them or it could get ugly really fast.

It's a huge need but we have recruited DT very well in this class already. I like what we have in the fold there. Another big-time guy there would be huge, but our biggest need on defense is by far upgrading our talent/commit list at LB. I've also heard mixed things on Blakely. I wont be surprised if he ends up being a DE.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Stoops and OU part ways at the end of the season.

It didnt help our coaches quit recruiting him. That blows my mjnd with one true elite mlb on the rister i trust butch in recruiting but im scratxhing my head here. I thi k had we never quit recruiting him by some of his comments we would be at the top rt now

Agree. We turned away from him too soon after offering it appears. The other teams in the fold really kept after him. This is not like CBJ. I mean this kid was one of the must again but we have allowed to get away it appears. I've not lost all hope yet though.

There are some posters who disagree, but I said weeks or months ago that he seemed too big for us at LB. Conley's recent statements indicate that he was stiff early on but has greatly improved his lateral movement. That is probably why our recruiting him has gone the way it has. I don't think that's a coincidence.

In the LB discussion, I wonder how Elliot Berry is developing. He is a Berry after all

35 looked good on the goaline when he was in against Florida. Think he might be able to stay at LB. Not sure it would be wise to slide him down.

Question on 247:

Did we gain any significant ground with the LB from Nashville Saturday? How serious are we about him now? What changed?

Callahan's response:

I think it helped Tennessee a little bit, but it doesn't sound like much is likely to come of it. I think the Vols reached out to him because there was an opening for them to maybe have a shot at getting his fifth and final official visit, but they were always going to have to make up a ton of ground in a hurry to have a legitimate shot. He's still hoping to make a decision in mid-October.
