'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

Announces October 12. His final 5 is Oregon, Alabama, A&M, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame.

Would Bama take him IYO? They seem to be in on and leading for several top LB's.

I mean hell he's a big time LB. Jacob is the #2 ILB in the nation and #37 over all prospect. I'm not sure what you mean top LBs. But yes he's a take if that's his choice. The 2 schools that recruit him the hardest are Bama and Oklahoma, with ND next. He does like Oregon and its the typical young kid thing of uniforms and gear. Also Ugo has told him its an amazing place to be.

Oregon and Oklahoma right now though? Why?

This puzzles me, how does a player like this not have any interest for real? He's at a position of SERIOUS need. I haven't followed his recruitment but what happened here?

You don't sleep? Me either Bb.

I can't say for sure but I would guess they thought he was a future DE? There never was much info about him from 247. Still think it's criminal Austin Smith is playing DE. That boy can run. Maybe they envision the same narrative unfolding.

Him at DE and Bynum at LB is craziness in itself. Darell Taylor having to play DE and not get run as a SLB is crazy as well. He's plenty athletic enough for it. I don't get it but the coaches have a plan I guess.

You and me both about DT. He just looks like a LB to me. How many HS DEs move to LB though? But not many played WR too. DT has skills.

This kid would fit right in here too. We've got to get some GOOD LBs this class. Not marginal prospects but guys of high level. Phillips is what the doctor ordered. We've got to stop making them DEs too. Austin Smith was setting the edge very well versus Georgia last year. He also was making playing in our Goalline defensive packages. I'm not a fan of not using him and Taylor as the SLB. But we play Bynum there and he just doesn't have it.

He played LB in HS some too. His skill set is for a true hybrid player. He's strong and can run. He should at least get Lewis minutes right now.

And the plan doesn't seem to be working out. We're a bit of a mess at LB while we have superior athletes not seeing the field because they're stacked down the depth chart at DE. I don't get it either. Taylor, Smith and their been talking about moving Bituli to DE. Meanwhile, 4 star LB recruits aren't developed and can't play. Crazy from the outside looking in

I completely agree with all of this about DT, one of my favorite players on the field. Ran down the Vtech QB more than once. But...we just have to let Shoop take the wheel and see what happens. You'd think after Bynum and JRM leave this year we might have Smith move back to DE or see if Taylor would make sense at LB. We'll be left with DKjr, Jump, Bryant and Mcdowell that have experience (more than just a few snaps), and Bates, Bituli, Sapp, Berry and Blakely waiting in the wings.

After typing that I actually don't feel too bad about our LB depth for next year.

EDIT: Or let DT add on another 10-15 lbs, because his frame can definitely handle that, and let him be a Curt Maggitt type guy. Since he played WR in high school I could see him roving behind the D line and snagging a few of those 3rd down passes for an INT.

Speaking of Austin Smith, are we trying to redshirt him? I haven't noticed him getting any PT at all this year.

I think I remember him being on an injured list. I could be wrong though. I would think if he was healthy he would be playing.
