'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

UT chose not to recruit him so it wasn't his choice. In the CPF or Dooley eras they'd hv taken him like most Power 5 schools would, but we've heard things like he's too big etc. So that's why ots very little chance. The top 3 are likely aTm, Oklahoma, & Bama

Dooley had some foolish instate recruiting gaffes as well. Vonn Bell immediately comes to mind. Fulmer passed on Patrick Willis. No one will bat 1.000, but Butch has proven he and his staff are pretty good talent evaluators.

I understand that but big athletes that can run and hit need to be taken.

We took Joc Bruce in a class so this shouldn't have been am afterthought.

I'm not excusing not taking him, and FWIW, it appears that maybe the staff had second thoughts and tried to get back in this recruitment, albeit too late.

My point is that no staff is immune from bad personnel decisions. Fulmer and Dooley both had their fair share. Kiffin too. This was maybe a bad call to pass/slow play Phillips by Butch and Co., but overall, they have proven their ability to evaluate talent so I'm more apt to forgive this potential "miss" on their part.

LB recruiting disappoints me to the fullest right now.

The Vonn Bell thing had to do with family benefits in which the Clean Up man aka Dooley wasn'twilling to do. Why I have no clue, but he refused. Pat Willis was left behind for Daniel Brooks who was supposed to be a phenom but couldn't stop fighting and having issues, R.I.P love me some D-Block. But yeah everyone misses on some to be exact. I'll be honest though I think this miss has something to do with Crabtree at Beech more than the staff missing. There were some personal issues with him playing his son in front of Jacob which led to Jacob transferring to East. Once he transferred there was rumors of him spreading bad rumors of Jacob being soft and not that good, but it all came out that was not the case in the end.

The only big miss that I can think of with Butch so far is Jalen Ramsey. But that was a pretty tough hill to climb considering he wasn't named coach until December 7th of 2012, and had only two months to try to pull Ramsey from Florida State who had just gone 12-2 and would win the Orange Bowl one month before signing day.

Interesting. That theory would lend some credence to why Tennessee didn't push hard earlier.

Jalen had more to do with Dooley early on than CBJ. If Dooley had put forth the effort early on when Jalen had interest UT would hv had a better chance when CBJ took over.

Dooley was terrible period...... I mean just in over his head in every aspect of the job. Worst coach in Tennessee history......

Yeah I remember how he burned a lot of bridges with in state high schools and mending those bridges has been one of Butch's biggest priorities.

Phillips announces 2:30 central time or eastern?

Bruce was probably a reach, but I think Butch was trying to load up on athletes in his second full class. Now, he can be a bit more selective with the depth he has recruited.

I have no doubt in thinking that the staff's original evaluation of Phillips was that he was too big to be a LB at UT and too stiff to be a DE. He just didn't seem like a fit. It looks like he has improved, and maybe they missed it. But the staff has proven they can evaluate talent.

I think Stoops makes a move this year. I really think he needs a change in scenery. wouldn't be surprised if this recruitment opens back up down the road. Is he an EE?

I'm sure it's a long shot, if not impossible, but I would love to see us work hard and flip this guy before NSD
