'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

Guys UT offered Jacob 1st when he was at Beech. The thing is he really doesn't fit what they want in a Lb. Guys hv to accept that and stop whining. Just because hes instate doesn't mean you have to tk a kid.

What do you mean? Experts like Leb, Eastside, Nationdom, Vol30 all say take instate guys no matter what. Surely you don't know more about this than them?

My guess is he fits a 3-4 better. If he adds any weight, he will be over 240 and could get to 250. Not a LB in our scheme, and coaches probably don't project as a good enough DE. JMO.

Similar size to Daniel Bituli, but moves better.

I know DCon has already confirmed UTs cooling interest, but they're silly to have backed off imo.

Don't care what state hes from, thr kid is a great LB regardless of scheme.

I am not a coach and just throwing out my opinion on why. Our coaches have proven to be good evaluators. We have 2 LB's committed who are 218 and 200. We have two current LB's on the roster who will get most of the playing time, and they played safety in high school. Kirkland is listed at 230. They are looking for something specific to be a DE. Not much else to say.

Maybin played OLB in HS mostly.
Kirkland was always a LB as well.

I'll be the first to admit - as I have many times - that those coaches know talent. And btw... we offered this kid early, but have since cooled. Proving my point.

And as far as DE they have many body types there.

Again... Phillips at 235 is faster than Burnam at 218. You can see this on film. Burnam is a good prospect, but at LB Phillips has more upside.

Again... not sure about this.
Id love D1Con to chime in on this..

Looking at the LBs committed, I'd have taken Phillips over any of them. Its not even really close. All you can do is shrug and hope for the best.

3- 4 linebackers have more versatility than most players on any defense. They play DE, MLB, OLB, Jack LB.

And again we have 2 freshman LBs that are 235 lbs.

AJ Johnson came to UT at 250 lbs.

After his Junior year he was 240 and much faster.

Body composition has a lot to do with growth.

This kid could easily stay at at 6'4" 235 and get even faster.

Yeah, so I'm not supporting Butch and Thig on this one.

Maybe he's got an attitude problem...maybe he's got a sense of entitlement that doesn't fit the profile these coaches look for in a recruit...maybe he told the staff he's more interested in being a rushing linebacker in a 3-4 instead of a MLB or Will...maybe the staff just values other guys more than him. There's more to recruiting than just "HE GOOD, HE LIVES NEAR US, LETS GET 'EM!"

Solon Page is a Dooley type recruit. The kid has some upside. Hes fast, but hes very similar to the kid we recruited out of Memphis Melrose 7 years?

Burnam- Good open field tackler, great hips. Aggressive.

Henderson- very athletic. Good instincts. Good frame.

Gray- Explosive and athletic. Physical.

Yeah, Phillips is different from these guys, but he can move very well for a MLB.

I asked DCon to chime in because hes closer to the situation.

You can take this mess on somewhere.
