'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

???
What?

I asked DCon to chime in because hes closer to the situation.

You can take this mess on somewhere.

First off, read it again. I didn't say anything in that message that was too difficult to understand. Second, I didn't quote you because multiple people over the past few pages have questioned why we aren't recruiting this guy very hard. This isn't geared towards you. These are all possible reasons why the staff isn't recruiting the guy to play for the vols, IMO. I'm not bashing your opinion. This is a forum that allows opinions.

Maybin played OLB in HS mostly.
Kirkland was always a LB as well.

I'll be the first to admit - as I have many times - that those coaches know talent. And btw... we offered this kid early, but have since cooled. Proving my point.

And as far as DE they have many body types there.

Again... Phillips at 235 is faster than Burnam at 218. You can see this on film. Burnam is a good prospect, but at LB Phillips has more upside.

Again... not sure about this.
Id love D1Con to chime in on this..

Maybin was a safety in HS. If Dooley had been his coach that first season, he would have stayed at that position.

You didn't have to quote anything. It was in your tone. Very condescending. Own it... don't back down. Be a man and own your feelings.

I asked DCon about his opinion because he ACTUALLY has information about the situation.
Because i don't care for "what ifs" like the many you suggested.

Butchna he played both.

And he still began as safety the spring he enrolled.

But he playef OLB quite a bit at Clarksville. Along with QB.

The only condescending part was the last part, where I said "HE GOOD, HE LIVES NEAR US, LETS GET 'EM!", which I will own and say was geared directly towards CrunchyLeb.

Wasn't their safety in that kind of LB role? And I remember the speculation on the position change...why I brought it up. :)

Found this on the 247 database

"First-team all-state linebacker as a junior...District offensive player of the year as a junior...Area player of the year as a junior...Area offensive player of the year as a sophomore...Invited to "The Opening", an all-star summer prospect camp held on the Nike Campus."

I remember he playing safety, OLB, and even DE in high school.

Yeah, I'll admit. if two kids are of similar skill set, one being from Tennessee, the other out of state. I'm taking the Tn kid.

I was okay with losing Hayden.
And Rodgers.
Stevens relates to Louisiana more than TN.
Higgins...

But, Richardson and Phillips not being recruited by us is a huge head scratcher to me.

Overall I'm fine with our instate haul.
Chandler
Gray
Jackson
Bumphus
Fant

Are all SEC players.

I do wish they wouldn't slow play Payton out of Hillsboro. Hes the most explosive player in the Mid- State.

I went off on a tangent...

We were Phillips first offer and we offered Richardson...so they were recruited. These guys we hired who need players to get the performance that justifies their continued employment felt that others were better fits. Prolly not enough to satisfy that itch on your noggin but it shouldn't affect your sleep pattern. I've questioned takes and non takes before and am content with the 180 in athletic talent since Butch arrived.

I was referencing Cortez McDowell in my first post.

Not really going to argue all this. I am not a coach. I am just putting the data out there on who our staff has recruited. They seem to like lighter, quicker guys and put some weight on them. There is a clear reason why they didn't continue to pursue him. Just as I listen to my doctor's advice for my health, I leave it to the coaches for these calls because they have vastly more experience.

What is the "clear " reason they cooled on him??

This is what I want clarified if possible from the great DE1Conley.

Doctors are wrong all the time.
So are coaches.

We take a guy like Jacob Johnson

But we let a 6'4" 230 lb sideline to sideline monster- that loves TN and was offered by them, get away???

Something isn't right.

This kid has the talent to be 265 lbs and still be a LB 6 years from now.

DeCon...you know something 😎. I know it lol. If you cant say, then you cant say. I'll understand...

Lol. One of those. Doctors go to med school for a reason. They are right far more than they are wrong. As I have stated in the past, it is fun being a keyboard fan.

265 is probable, still a LB is not

Rivals now has Phillips at #37 overall. I knew he was in the top250, but don't recall him being anywhere close to top50. Maybe I just missed it. Obviously a big time talent.

Yeah. I hope the staff changes their mind.

He can play in our defense. Sam, Mike or DE.

Just sign him and then figure it out later. Enormous talent.

I know some said that after he didn't have UT in his top 5. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Burnam is 6'2 220. Phillips looks to be 6'3.5 228. IMO put the talent on the field. Most coaches should be able to make it work.

Phillips is considerably bigger. Hes Jalen Hurd size.

He'll be 240 beginning of freshman year.

Big kid.
