'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

He's a really good player, but I read that the staff had made up their mind that he was a DE at the next level. He wants to play LB.

Guys UT offered Jacob 1st when he was at Beech. The thing is he really doesn't fit what they want in a Lb. Guys hv to accept that and stop whining. Just because hes instate doesn't mean you have to tk a kid.

Agree. Has to fit the profile.

I guess I miss when every position on the field didn't require a cookie cutter recruit to fill it. Being 5-10lbs bigger or smaller didn't really matter. An inch or two shorter or taller wasn't a big deal. A half step slower wasn't a deal breaker. Coaches took kids, coached them up, and molded them into what they needed. Good football players can play football, in any system.

Probably just the result of access to so much information these days.

As long as they have the right area code right?

These coaches all across the country recruiting guys that fit their system must be idiots. Doesn't really matter what size they are, how well they run or how athletic they are, just as long as they are in state. Then just coach'em up and mold them into what you want.......

Having a team filled with a number of players who are 5-10 bigger or smaller, an inch or two shorter, a half step slower is a step backwards. We've done that and it got us 8 years of misery.

#1 This makes it that much MORE clear you don't understand the game of football with any depth (yeah yeah I know, and the sky is blue).

#2 From somebody who coaches high school and is forced to try to fit square pegs into round holes sometimes, you obviously have never coached before (yeah yeah I know, water is wet).

Back in the day, you didn't need one of those sissy mouthguards! You chucked a rock in your pie hole and bit down on that when your leather helmet got all clippity clappity! And then you went to the diner afterwards and the Grape Ne-Hi would wash the broken molars away. Didn't touch your deductible...didn't HAVE a deductible...didn't have insurance! :aggressive:

Have you been smoking the lint from your dryer again?

Guess coaches probably miss the days when people who know nothing about coaching, weren't able to sit at their keyboards in the Grand Caymans and complain about or second guess their every decision.

Oh the good ole days of football...when the size of the player didn't matter.

I can say when I go back and read the thread it reads like a lot of instate recruit threads read. Kid is a star. Likes the idea of being a Vol. Shows out on the field and at camps. Then, just doesn't fit what we need.

In April of THIS year the updates say he's very physical, moves well in space, covers RBs & TEs well. 6'3-6'4 and 230ish. Can play at OU, Bama, Ole Miss, or ND. Just won't work in Orange.

Yeah, I laugh.
