'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

I would say Higgins because he would probably be attractive to Lawrence. But I could be entirely wrong about that. But I'll say Higgins for now.

Honestly, why even ask the question? It doesn't work that way.

Because I thought it would make for interesting discussion. Most everyone has agreed to this point, but of course, this is Volnation, so it was inevitable that someone would show their ass at some point.

And just how does it "not work that way" in a hypothetical scenario?

Playmakers can't make plays if they don't have time to get the ball. I'll take Smith.

Even if he does go D-line....the game is won at the line of scrimmage.

Smith every day and twice on Sundays.

Edit: My bad, twice on Sundays is simply unrealistic; it doesn't work that way in a hypothetical scenario.

Did you say we were switching games to Sundays? Quick, somebody start a panic thread! :scare:

I eagerly await our first Tuesday night game. That meltdown would be epicer than the well, almost any other meltdown.

Playmakers also can't make plays if they aren't playmakers

To me 1 elite wr has more of an effect on an offense than 1 elite OL would have as there are still 4 more that could be exploited by the other team

I've seen many teams where you take off that one top wideout and the whole offense stagnates

A WR is almost useless when the QB is laying on his back. You build great teams from the inside out. But you do have to have playmakers too. But overall, OL and DL recruiting is where you build long term success.

My friend's nephew will be at the elite lineman camp, I told him to call out Trey day 1 lol, of course that may not be smart for a 6'0" 240 pound soon to be sophomore.

I have to respectfully disagree. Your argument is based on the assumption that the other 4 linemen are not very good. We've recruited exceptionally well at that position over the last few years, and we're in on several more good ones.

Also, assuming both Higgins and Smith are on the field at the same time, only Smith will be directly involved in the play each time. It's been beaten to death, but we have had a run-heavy offense as of late, which takes Tee out of the equation, say, a little over half the time. The line is either protecting the quarterback or opening up holes. They don't get a play off.

I would rather have 5 elite OL and 5 moderate skill players than vice versa.
(Edit: with the same quarterback)

Mine was more of a general statement on the effect 1 wr can make versus 1 tackle

1 wr can dictate coverage and open up N offense. 1 tackle can't so much if the rest of the line isn't good

If you asking if I can have an elite OLine or an elite WR corp I'd take the elite OL

But if I only get 1 elite then in college I'm picking QB, rb, wr before tackle

Hypothetical situation:
Would you rather have Trey Smith and lose Tee Higgins to an OOC school like Clemson, or land Higgins and lose Smith to an every year rival like Bama?

I'm in the championships are built in the trenches camp. Want them both and expect the staff to land them both.

I live right by USJ. I may have to go watch this. Maybe if I put all my Nike gear on and carry a clipboard I can get close to the action. 😃

I see your point. That's fair. Go Vols.
