'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

I'm in the championships are built in the trenches camp. Want them both and expect the staff to land them both.

Championships ARE built in the trenches. Especially in the SEC, where the defensive line play is the best in the nation, and the QB play, quite frankly, isn't.

We can afford to lose Tee. He's an excellent athlete out there on the edge, and it would hurt to lose a hometown kid.

But this Smith kid is a transcendent talent at LT. The kind of kid your whole offense revolves around. Just speaking in terms of talent, this kid belongs in the conversation with Laremy Tunsil and Cam Robinson.

So the debate really isn't one. The more important player is Smith. No question.

Just speaking in terms of talent

And for the record. Trey is a GREAT kid. Super intelligent, and by all accounts has his head on straight.

My friend's nephew will be at the elite lineman camp, I told him to call out Trey day 1 lol, of course that may not be smart for a 6'0" 240 pound soon to be sophomore.

What does your "friend" think of you trying to have his nephew killed?

I think when it's top talent( Higgins, Smith, Stevens, Chandler) it is great to keep top talent home, but if you are telling me to decide between a three star prospect from Knoxville or a three star from Atlanta or Virginia beach... Sorry kid from knoxville. We have really good talent in state this year which is awesome, but If the staff signed a whole class of out of state kids because they thought they were better than the kids we have in state, I'll roll with the staff.

I agree but I just say take the best that fit your system period.

The idea is that instate kids should be more naturally inclined to go to the home school. You certainly don't want every guy who is willing to sign up, but you do want it to be a forgone conclusion that the elite guys in TN just always go to UT. Think LSU, they own the state of LA and almost always get the top guys out of their home state. While TN doesn't produce an entire team's worth of SEC talent, the top guys should be heading straight to UT 9 times out of 10.

Don't agree. UT has always built their teams with out of state talent. You get the best, regardless of zip code. Most kids want to leave whatever state they are in to go to college, that's reality. I know it may be a controversial opinion but its the poorer states where the kids stay close to home, hence the LA and MS kids staying close.

I agree with most of that, except to say this. It's the super stars who do want to stay home that are the most important. If a No 3 recruiting class and a No 5 recruiting class are virtually identical in talent, then It would be preferable to have your Cliftons, Teagues, Overstreets and Al Wilsons. We should always go after the most talented, but if we can get players who play for pride too then so much the better.
