'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

Must have Smith if this class is going anywhere. Butch has to find some way to get him and there will no excuse good enough if he doesn't.

Top 10 aint good enough.

If you want to compete for national titles, you need to be recruiting top 5 classes 3 out of every 4 years.

Top 10 will allow you to compete for Natty every 3 or 4 years - LSU is a good example. To be consistently good, I agree that you need a top 5 class at least every 2 cycles if you can develop players. At the end of the day, only 24 start with 48 in the two deep.

24? 11 on O 13 on D?

We've actually had a few classes that were close to or right at top 5. It's not a perfect science, and getting players better and coaching them up is IMPORTANT also. It just isn't rankings. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

I tend to agree with this. Also need good coaching.
ie: Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, USC, FSU, LSU - All of these guys were landing top 5 when they won the Natty. - Also had excellent coaches.

Not sure about Auburn but they had a few top classes.

It is tough to recruit top five every year where you already have six other teams there. I guess this isn't exactly science, huh.

No, probably not. Our coaching staff just has to figure out how to get it done. We don't have the talent pool that Florida has or LSU or Georgia, so it is much harder for Butch. He's been doing a great job overall IMO.

Don't worry. We already have more 3*'s than Bama(2), UGA(3) and LSU(7) put together.....:)

Definitely need to finish strong. Just need to have a really good season this year. This is where we find out just how good this coaching staff can be. Let's hope they have learned a thing or two over the past few years in the SEC.

I hope you are dead on......

Interested to see how our tackle situation looks this year. I bet staff is hoping Kendrick wins one spot to help with compete for playing time pitch to Smith. One thing a bama would have is the replace Cam Robinson pitch

Seriously. Some of you people really need to give up following recruiting. It really isn't for you. Enjoy the summer and come back in the fall when there are games to be watched.

Following recruiting can be a stressful thing if you let it be, but it really isn't much, if any, different than any other year. You get some recruits, you lose some recruits. About the only things different in recruiting is 1) More in-state talent in TN. 2) More media outlets to follow from.

#2 is the one I personally have a problem with, because it has caused a lot of you guys to come out of the woodwork and jump on the recruiting bandwagon without having a clue as to how recruiting works/flows.

I think that I might take your advice. It's been a pretty tough three weeks, for my favorite sports teams. There does not seem to be much good news here, lately. I also know that will undoubtedly change. I don't take everything negative, as some people here cannot wait to do, but it would be great for some good "feels" about just about any prospect at this point.

Blam! Well said. This is nothing like the Dooley days. That was terrible. In recent years, everything typically ends up ok. Ride the waves and enjoy the process. We need to get these guys to a big game and win.

So he sees a highly recruited tackle get beat out by a guy who's barely played in two years, and THAT will make him flock to the program? Maybe he'll wonder about Niehaus and/or Tatum under that auspice?
