'17 TN RB/CB Chase Hayden (Arkansas commit)

Graduating in spring and looking at possibly transferring from Ark is the talk on VQ.

Maybe he’s a Vol next fall?
With all due respect to the kid and his VFL father, I don’t think adding him to our roster helps the running back position. We need rb studs like we used to have here back in the day....just don’t think he fits that description

I could see him feeling a gap. He could be in the competition for carries next year and then 2021 he would be a senior, gray would be a junior, 2 sophomore runnings backs in Hodge and hopefully Whitehead, and then you still have a spot to sell to a top tier running back to be the future in the 2021 class.

He's not holding a spot for 4 or 5 years.
Just 2. He could make one critical play against a Florida in a victory and the decision to take him would be worth it.

Like some guys have eluded to, his father is helping bigtime with recruiting relations in Memphis. And he's a legacy.

Agreed.

Not only would he bring experience at the position in 2021, but none of the runningbacks have shown enough this year to lock the 2021 spot up.

Also him and his brother can help us to continue to get a presence in Memphis. We are a year or two off, but we need enough Memphis kids so Knoxville feels at home to them even though it's pretty far away.

Arkansas is much closer but you feel the state pride for 4 years if you come to Knoxville.

It's nice that we've pulled 3 good kids from that city this year. Gray last year. Banks and Carvin the year before. Have to keep it up.

We get the 3 best players from Memphis every year, and good things will happen on the football field. A lot of developed and undeveloped talent in that city

Arkansas is much closer? Yes, the state is but not the university.

I think it’s about an hour or a little less difference. I live in a suburb, went to UT, and my brother is in NW Arkansas. Yes, it’s closer but not by a whole lot.
Memphis is one of the top two talent rich areas in the state and the whole SEC West is just as close if not closer to it. Nashville, one of the other hotbeds, is made up of transplants so it seems like a third of the kids don't have loyalty to the state or area. Makes it hard to lock up in state recruiting and is why we shouldn't live by building a fence around the state.

All I said was that Arkansas is not “much closer” than UT. I can understand losing kids to maybe Ole Miss or MSU because of location but not Arkansas.

Aaron Hayden is a true VFL. It’s a real shame that Butch and company slow played his son in his recruitment to UT.

I think it was more of position they wanted him at than slow playing but I could be wrong. I recall we wanted him at WR and he was adamant about RB. We we happy with RBs we had or were in on at time. At time it was best decision for both sides regarding scheme fit. Now our scheme fits him so it would make sense to have him back

Agree with the Ole Miss and MSU because of distants. I was just even expanding on that point. I believe just because your parents pay taxes to the state doesn't mean you are going to like the Vols more than any other team where every other school is closer. We shouldn't be losing recruits to Arkansas because Arkansas is just a worst option in terms of facilities and history. I can see why LSU, Auburn, and Bama is able to take kids from Memphis.

Perhaps. I just think that we HAVE TO find running back studs in the mold of a Jamal Lewis, a Travis Henry, a Chuck Webb, a Charlie Garner if we wanna get where we all want to be. We desperately need stud running backs here, along the lines of what Georgia brings in every year. We currently don’t have ANYBODY remotely like a DeAndre Swift or Todd Gurley and adding Chase Hayden just doesn’t get us there...matter of fact, adding him probably has us take a step back from Ty and Tim and Eric and that’s not good, at all. Jmo.

Agree on all points KB. You mentioned Swift and Gurley. I would throw names like Michel, Chubb, Fournette as well. Those are the type of RBs we need imo.

I don't think adding him is taking a step back because all those players are still on the team. An SEC schedule is a hard on running backs. I wouldn't count on Hayden being a work horse but having a upperclassmen will help split the load with the two Sophomores and hopefully the True Freshman game changer we are all counting on bringing in for the class of 21. I don't see Eric Gray being an every down back here so even as a junior we won't be relying on him taking more than 3rd down snaps.

Taking Chase isn't taking a spot from an elite back and it isn't a step back. We weren't able to get traction with any of the elite RBs in this class. Even if we can flip somebody, it's unlikely to be a top guy who'll come in game-ready-- unless we take a JUCO like White. At most, we have Ty and Jordan another year. Both would leave this year if they thought they could draft high enough. We need another RB in this class and I'm sure it'll be a priority to sign several next class.

I agree and believe our OL improvement being late to the party, is a reason why.
We seem surprised but I think elites had ruled us out by the time we started giving a real glimpse of what we could be.
Get a fresh start with next year's batch tho.

It was more he wanted him at slot instead of running back. You know how Butch always knew better than EVERYONE else where guys should play. He screwed Tyler Byrd as much as anyone. Should’ve been a DB. Too late once JCP got here.
