'17 VA DE Elijah Conliffe (Florida commit)

So in my mind if they said "You have a spot but we need to know now" and he said "I don't know" so they moved on the chances of him actually coming here if we waited on him for a week are slim to none.

I think it was more of a "Bird in the hand" type thing.

Exactly. There is no law you have to oversign to the max every year in the name of quantity over quality.

The Vols tried waiting on a talented defensive line recruit last year with Derrick Brown-- and then ended up without a high school DT when Brown surprised them by going to Auburn. There's no perfect plan for recruiting when high school kids are driving the process.

The problem we have right now is that we don't really have much in the way of marginal recruits right now. Coleman, Thaxton, and Fant are some of the only ones that immediately pop to mind that I would be completely fine with losing.

I certainly want Conliffe, and the possibility of picking up Parks or Ray.

Then again, I love D-line.
I could think of plenty for a big time DT.

Hubbs Basically said yesterday that the Vols would love to have Conliffe but they'd have to part ways with someone to do it. He said there is no way they were going to hang a kid out to dry at the last minute. That's why they pressured him for a commitment.

So, it sounds like "he gone," unless someone does not make it in because of grades and he likely will not wait too long because he might not get even his second choice. I do agree that Butch should consider slowing his roll with some of the early commits.

He may be right. But it's also possible UT may have an understanding with 1 or 2 of its commits (especially if grades are a concern) that they might end up as blueshirts and/or need to have a backup plan for themselves in case they get squeezed out.

Yep. Several different ways to work the numbers. Somehow, someway they always seem to work themselves out. If either Ray or Conliffe wants a spot, they'll get it.

Conliffe has gotten some recent CBs to Florida, but Tennessee still has the vast majority. Other than Bartow, the other CBs seem to be random guys and picks. We will make room if he wants to be at Tennessee.

I don't know which one of the recruits that have grade concerns have not been on official visits or been visited by coaches. This would be an important detail to factor in. But, the way Hubbs made it out, that they were not cutting anyone loose for Conliffe this late in the game. He used the words "After a little digging" so that told me that it came from the staff.
