'18 FL QB Michael Penix Jr.

As long as he's chalking up the wins for us, they can say all they want about a name.

"Penix drills it to the Tight End for a touchdown. And the Florida fans continue with an onslaught of boos and chanting Penix Sucks, Penix Sucks. But Penix raises the ball high in the air, looks straight at the Florida fanbase and rubs it in their faces".

I'm excited about this guy regardless of the Martinez situation. Even he doesn't end up seeing any time at QB he could easily be a WR.

Heard that Butch has the Wayans brothers developing a project at UT. Maybe it is coincidence that Penix just happens to look like one of the Wayans brothers.

Psyched about Martinez possibility, but I'm still psyched about this kid as well. I think they'll both do great things in Knoxville, and I can't wait to see it.

Scheffield, Scurry, any other young WR out there.... TN is where you want to be. Believe that.

I think this kid is under-rated. The videos, jr stats and praise he's been getting at camps show this kid has talent.

One other thing you can say about Penix, he must make great decisions. If I read his stats right for his junior season, he threw for over 2,000 yards for 31 touchdowns and only 1 interception. That alone should get Butch and Canales excited.

Agreed. He made huge strides between his Sophomore and Junior seasons. I can't wait to see what he does as a Senior. We could have a great QB competition in a couple years with JG, McBride, Jones, Penix, and Martinez. That is some serious depth right there.

I'm excited to have this kid as a part of our class with or without Martinez. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people.

Per Hubbs

Meanwhile, Canales will see 2018 commit Michael Penix (Tampa Bay Tech) throw for the first time Friday. The southpaw quarterback committed to the Vols after the spring game and impressed at a recent Opening camp in Washington D.C.

Excellent...Canales going to show Penix love, while we are getting a commitment from Martinez today.

It'll be interesting to see what happens after they see him throw. VQ guys were very surprised UT took his commit without Canales having seen him.

Maybe they felt like they needed to lock up at least one as soon as possible? Maybe they're using it as ammo to push Martinez to commit, by saying that since one spot is taken and they are only taking two, he had better hurry up and jump on the other spot?

Just wanted to say that I know a lot of people are excited about Martinez, and for good reason. But let's not dismiss Penix. I am just as excited this young man chose to be a VFL as well and I think with both of these talents, were in very good shape at the position the next several years.

Agreed. You always need quality depth in case of injury, especially at QB.

Best part of having 2 top talents is: they get to compete to WIN the job!! It can only make them both better. Go for them, Good for VOLNATION!

I know we are taking two Qbs in this class, but I haven't kept up with this guys recruitment closely. Is their potential to move to Wr or db here? Is he that kind of athlete like Jennings or is he a quarterback all the way? If he doesn't win the job of course in a few years.

Anyone have access to what he said about the Martinez commitment?

I think he's an athlete playing QB. Still learning the position, but I think QB is his position.

Just saw Canales in the Atlanta airport rockin the Power T. He looked tired. I say keep it up - this kid and Martinez are quite the haul.

Suddenly having Sheriron Jones argument flashbacks. :)

I think it was assumed all along that we would take 2 QBs in the 2018 class. Both fit the style that CBJ prefers. I thought that Penix had impressed at one of the summer camps, and that was why they had been recruiting him. Maybe this was the first time CMC has seen Penix in person since he was hired. I think we got exactly what we needed for this class.

It is the first time Canales has seen Penix throw in person. That was posted somewhere the other day. Penix has impressed at two separate camps this summer, and IIRC, won QB MVP at one of them.

"Penix was the MVP of the camp, over 4-stars Joe Milton and Joey Gatewood." - Woody Wommack
