'18 GA QB Justin Fields

Just to play devil's advocate here, the wildcard with all this is Martinez and the possibility he may not play this year. If that is the case, you have to wonder what he'll be next fall. He won't have played in a real game in two years. If the #1 player in the country is a possibility, I don't think you just totally close the door on him, especially when he was higher on the board than Martinez was from the beginning. I think we have to explore all options.

I say all that fully admitting that I LOVE Martinez's film and I want him in this class. The injury and the time he has/will have missed just concerns me.

He played this past season...4000 yards and 39 tds worth. Missing this season allows him to be fully healed and then redshirt a year in the program. Other programs back off and Penix doesn't feel that the cards are against him...so we bring in two four star talents. Play around with Fields and waive our credibility...most likely lose all 3.

Maybe. I think it is a little more that his dad is a diva.

Hurd situation all over again. I'm just saying Fields looks great on tape and apparently in person. I like our two though as well and they don't seem to have the extra baggage that this kid does. Now maybe he's the next Cam Newton but we have these kids every year that are supposedly the next great QB and most of them don't pan out.

You take the best players you can get. If Fields really wants in, then make room for him.

I think it would be insane to take risk losing Martinez and Penix for a possibility of Fields. Based on what i have seen on Fields, he is not and has not considered Tennessee in over a year. Based on what i read this morning, Georgia, FSU and Auburn are the top 3. I have seen no mention of Tennessee in over a year, except when Field's dad vcalled out our staff for not knowing them on their first visit.

Fields recruitment makes me think he'll end up transferring from whichever school he signs with if he doesn't win the job right away. Just a feeling. But he's super talented, wish he would have committed to UT when he had his chance.

Fields dad said that 'he has only stated one time who was his favorite, Tennessee, every time they played Rocky Top, I got cold chills, especially when they were winning. When Justin decommitted, TN has a couple 18 commits so they are set".

Hmm, I believe I would kick the tires or throw a hook just to see if he would bite.

When did he say this and where was it reported. Was it before or after he went to SECCountry with the story thathe and Justin felt snubbed by the Vol staff, when they visited for a game after Justin's freshman season.

Weird recruitment = weird career

Dormady didn't play his JR year due to similar injury. He is fine now. It's not like we are expecting Martinez to have to play day 1. Plenty of time to gather his arm strength before we need him

Butchna hit the nail on the head. This kid is very talented but we have two very talented kids already committed. They chose to commit when the opportunity presented so I am rolling with them. Fields' baggage, aka Pops, just confirms that we don't need to kick these tires. We need a focused locker room free from drama and pre madonnas and/or there dads.

Would you trade him for Josh Rosen (#1 player in 15 class) right now though? I would.

I really just tossed it out there for discussion. I'm not suggesting we throw Martinez to the curb just for a shot with Fields. As Butchna said, we may lose all three if you do that. Now if you knew you could land Fields, without a doubt, then I think it becomes more of a discussion. There is no indication of that though. Like I said, I love Martinez's film. I just hope he makes it here and is in full health. His lost time on the field won't help, but as you said, hopefully we aren't relying on him to play next year.

Tend to agree here..

Glitch, I just had a terrible thought. Are we starting to sound like crunchy leb?

Thought that when I posted...very CrunchyLebesque. :) I would say Butch has a pretty solid record of sticking with injured commits...ala Chance Hall and Devonte Brooks, and that was never acknowledged by our favorite fly by night island dweller.

He said it two days ago on 247 and he said the last time he mentioned Tn, the subject was taken out of context. Seemed apologetic about that. Said the decision is Justin's and seemed a little disappointed he didn't pick Tn the first time. He said Justin just needs to spend time watching games and spend time on his knees in prayer and go where he feels lead.

Great post. I would also add that when the USC QB decommitted and USC came calling to Martinez he initially had some interest but basically wound up saying "thanks but no thanks" and honored his commitment to UT. We should pay him the same respect and value his commitment.

At some point, loyalty and trust matters.

Didn't want in when we had zero QB commits in this class...he doesn't want in. :wavey:

I know. Thats why I said IF. Say he wants to flip to us close to NSD? Do we just say no thanks to a QB with his skills? I dont care about diva like behavior. If a dude can play, then bring him on.

I like both of our QBs. But it would seem to me that passing on a guy like Fields would be a mistake.

Ridiculous. So you are assuming a kid is going to create drama in the locker room based on things that happen during his recruitment? Wow. Thats insane.

I would love to land Fields, but only if Penix or Martinez decommit on their own. No reason to risk going after Fields to have both decommit
