'18 TN OT Max Wray

Correct.. Huge mistake

What more could Butch have done? It was established that he offered Wray 11 days after UGA. He could have kept Pitman but he wasn't a good fit to coach in Butch's offense. He could've upgraded the OL coach in the off season but other than that what more could Butch have done that you are SURE that he didn't do?

IMO personal relationships with college staffs should be part of it, good or bad. If a kid I'm working with looks to me for advice I'm providing it. I'm not going to sugarcoat it and let him make a poor decision I could have helped him avoid. There has to be a lot of trust in recruiting and I'd bet a lot of these recruits trust the guys helping them get better everyday. If I've had bad experiences with a certain staff I'd be doing a disservice to the kid to keep it quiet as a benefit to the staff.

I make distinctions in my life between professional and personal relationships and act accordingly. I'm not sure you do, I'm not sure De1 does. I have no evidence from Buck really to make a judgment one way or another.

Pittman is known as a great coach and puts players into the NFL. Mahoney was unknown in the South..

Then that's the narrative Wray's family should have went with. Putting the heat on the coaches because of a trivial timing issue reflects dishonesty on their part. Don't know why people create so many false boogeymen to explain their poor behavior these days.

.. Just making a general comment about Pittman.. No idea about this guys family.

I've been following Wray's recruitment pretty closely and haven't seen any public quotes from him or his parents about not being happy with the timing of his Tenn offer. Maybe I missed it. I've actually been very impressed with Wray and his parents in the few interviews I've seen or read, and haven't come across any quotes to make me think they are bitter and dishonest.

Pittman caught a lot of heat as an OL coach during his tenure here, he is a very good recruiter. When Doolittle left several of his players wanted him to stay.

I always winced a little on Pittman as he was on Butch Davis' staff at UNC during all the shenanigans that went on, even though he was never implicated.

I doubt the UGA homer sites will share that side of the story. No doubt the allure of being able to see Coach Richt's mini fridge he left behind is what sealed the deal in this recruitment. For the record, the late offer costing us narrative came from PFort and Hubbs. Both of which have a good record of not offering slanted views. So I'm inclined to listen to their take.

Chaney was only coming to UGA if Kirby could get Pittman (according to Schlabach). I don't think Pittman is/was a drinking buddy of Chaney's, he is a good coach.

Chaney looks rough BTW, that fatty liver disease. Was he given the mini-fridge, perhaps?

Have you seen the 35 minute interview with Max Wray done by Dawgnation? He had multiple opportunities in that interview to say something negative about the Tenn staff; but didn't. Wray is one of the most impressive HS kids I've seen interviewed. Unlike you, who apparently gets your information from Tenn homer sites; I get my info from the recruit and parents of the recruit. IMO calling the Wray family dishonest based on hearsay is not fair to the Wrays. Again I ask; is Max or his family giving interviews saying anything other than they like Pittman and that UGA has a great Physical Therapy program? You do know he wants to be a Physical Therapist right? Or did PFort and Hubbs leave that detail out?

So because a kid or his parents doesn't share his feelings for the world to see, there's nothing to the story? I doubt very seriously the Wrays would look into a camera with a stern look and openly admit part of their decision was based on their perception of being dissed by Tennessee. Sounds like a very naive way of looking at things. Besides, you're on a message board. That's what we do discuss recruiting and how specific recruitments go down. There have been multiple people outside of Hubbs and Fortenberry that have confirmed this story, including the barbershop badass. If a person claims his decision was based on one thing and then switches their narrative, then yes that's not being honest. It doesn't matter why he picked UGA, so why change the story?

And do you even know what 'homer' means? It's not predicting kids to other schools to your paying clientele. Of course, a UGA fan wouldn't understand that concept seeing as though their sites tell their board members they are getting every recruit and all is well in their snowglobe. And you do realize 2018 is a long time before this kid shoots UGA his letter of intent, yes?

Might as well shut this thread down. He isn't going anywhere unless Chaney and Pittman leave before his NSD which with them two I never say never. Like a pair of nomads hopping from school to school. I'm not even worried about him as much as it will suck to miss on his little brother. If we land Smith and McKenzie/Colbert in 2017 class to add to Hall/Richmond/Tatum/Johnson/ Neihuas then it's pretty clear UGA has more opp for early playing time for Max.

I know a lot of people are sold on Pittman as this great OL coach. IMO I will classify him as a good OL that is great at relationships and recruiting. When I look at his background I don't know much about UNC OL since I don't follow them. When he came to TN he inherited a great talented OL group whose main issue before he arrived wasn't so much coaching ability but was young, inexperienced kids being yelled at by an old grump in Heinstand who HS went on to have success since he left so he obviously isn't bad. Pittman inherited a group that was older and had lots of game experience. I didn't think they ran blocked for crap but pass pro was top notch. How much was Pitt vs Chaney who also is very good with OL. Then he goes to Arky but we all know the true architect is Beliema there for OL. I'm interested to see how he does at UGA to see a true sense of his coaching.

DeBord needs to move to O-line coach, and Butch should hire an OC with a QB background IMO. Regardless who the OC is, they are going to run Butch's system.

I am asking this because I truly want to know, not because i'm questioning your evaluation. How does everyone on here know that Mahoney is terrible at coaching OL?

The reason I ask is there have been a few OL prospects that have come here for camps and have commented on how much they were impressed with him. Really liked how hands on he was, also heard Griffith from SEC Country stating the same the other night?

Again, I am not picking a fight, I have no expertise in this, and am curious??

Tennessee has an outstanding Physical Therapy program. Got one in the fam.

Max is from Franklin. Therefore, he is a momma's boy. Same as Scotty's Flat Top. End of story.

Truth is usually somewhere in the middle. He probably isn't near as bad as he is made out to be on boards. Hard to know from the outside. He was fine before he got here at lower levels. His first yr the OL was super talented and underachieved but not best for the scheme so does all that fall on him or more scheme? Prob a little of both. His second year he gets a total pass because you got a freshman C playing LT, a freshman LG, a first yr starter that is your best G playing RT, a first yr center, and only one vet in Jackson. Yr 3 crazy improvement but Debord was here so he prob get most of the credit and I'm sure Mahoney probably deserves a smidge more credit that he gets. He probably by now has learned tricks from Debord.

IMHO, the offensive line has a chance to be the most improved group from 2015 to 2016. Take a look:

1) Coleman Thomas - This year, he will be the best Vols center since Scott Wells. Absolute NFL lock.

2) Jashon Robertson & Dylan Wiesman - Both making pre-season all-SEC teams. Coupled with Thomas, we are rock solid up middle.

3) Chance Hall - Personally, I like him at RT.

4) Drew Richmond - We have our highest rated 5 star prospect at the most important position on the team with a redshirt year under belt. He is a freshman, so there will be a few growing pains. But, Drew is going to be a stud.

5) Brett Kendrick - 6'6" 320 pounds of solid depth. Would be starting for most SEC teams. Can play three positions.

6) Charles Mosley - In best shape of life. High school mega-star. Finally ready to handle LG as needed.

7) Venzell Boulware - Can play in SEC.

8) Austin Sanders - Blood runs orange. Red-shirted. Ready to play.

9) Jack Jones - A one-man street fight at RG. Learned a ton from last year. Ready to be more consistent.

We are ten deep and can easily redshirt the entire freshman class. On the OL, we are loaded for years to come. IMHO, the vast majority of the credit goes to the position coach..........Don Mahoney!

Butch decided to not keep Pittman well before Wray's recruitment. I admitted that Pittman was a good coach but what else could Butch have done. Some people act like Butch should have done more in this recruitment and I would like those people to be specific. What could Butch have done to satisfy you? UT has pulled some pretty nice OL talent since they got here. Did they suddenly get bad at OL recruiting? What was Butch supposed to do that would make you feel that he didn't "screw up" this recruitment. Please be specific.

So Wray is planning on being at UGA 7-8 years? You do know that's a doctorate degree right? Maybe his parents left that part out.

Mahoney gets mentioned all of the time by recruits. They seem to like him and his coaching style. The only reason people on here don't like him is that he was having to use walkons, full on VFLs but walkons nonetheless, to try and block for a non-mobile QB in a read option offense where the non-mobile QB never kept the ball on the option. Of course the OL is gonna look like a weak link. The opposing D's knew that Worley would never keep it. As soon as Dibbs took over the OL play improved because the main cog now better fit the machine. I think Mahoney may be better than some think but it is convenient to blame him for slower that demanded progress.

Every year the worst performing position group has a "terrible coach." 2 years ago it was Mahoney. Last year they were much improved and now Coach Z is considered the worst. This year the WR's will ball out and he will get credit again. Hopefully we just win the Natty and there is no position coach who takes all the blame.
